Hi Everyone,
I am brand new to this forum, so hopefully there is someone out there that has run up against this problem and can help me out.
My son and I are trying to restore a 1986 MK1a back to good shape, and one of the things that is important is returning it to how it came from the factory. So since it did not have a radio, we got one from a European person, but I am having trouble sorting out the wiring because the factory plug on the replacement radio is cut off.
The radio is the AM\FM Cassette tape 86120-17090 and it was from a euro MR2
First of all, I am from the US, so it occurred to me that the radio may not even work in the US?
The radio has 6 wires coming out of it:
Black
Blue
Orange
Gray
Red
Red with Black stripe
The harness in the car has:
Light Green
Pink
Gray
Blue
Purple
Brown
Black
Dark Green
There is an amplifier under the seat
I have and aftermarket plug that I can wire to the radio if I can sort which wire goes where. As I am starting to figure out, this is not a standard radio wiring. Any help will be immensely appreciated.
Thanks,
Jim

Have look here https://www.mr2oc.co.uk/know-your-2/mk1 ... kbartid=78 you should find some of the info you need.
Also download Toyota-Wiring.pdf and Antenna.pdf from my website https://jlawson.co.uk/downloads/category/10-mk1
Both may be of use to you
Any pictures of the actual stereo ?
The European FM band ranges from 87.5 to 108 megahertz (MHz) in the USA it's 88 to 108 MHz, Japan uses 76 to 95 MHz. So the FM band of the radio should work OK in the States

Re: 1986 MK1A Radio\Cassette Wiring
I'm not convinced that head unit is from a MK1, the wire colours don't match any of the drawings or manuals I have, so not much help there I'm afraid, I have a few more drawings to check but not too hopeful
Also struggling to match up the harness colours to any of variations I have recorded
These are some of the variations I've come across
MK1a (colours in brackets are additional variations)
light blue(blue/brown) = permanent +12v
pink/blue = ignition controlled +12v
green = +12v from the dash lights, when on
white/black = Earth ( ground )
green = subwoofer remote turn on
white = left speaker -ve
yellow (yellow/black) = left speaker +ve
black/red = right speaker -ve
red (red/black) = right speaker +ve
BLUE (constant 12v power)
PINK & BLUE (ignition controlled 12v power)
RED (right speaker +)
BLACK&RED (right speaker -)
YELLOW (left speaker +)
WHITE (left speaker -)
GREEN (subwoofer amp power-on signal)
GREEN (12v power when headlights are turned on (dims the stereo lights))
Right Front Speaker (+) Green Gray
Left Front Speaker (+) Pink White
Right Front Speaker (-) Blue Gray w/ Black Stripe
Left Front Speaker (-) Purple White w/ Black Stripe
Ground Wire Black or Brown
+12 Volt Ignition Wire Gray Red
MK1b
If you have access to a test meter them most of the harness wires are relatively easy to identify,
With everything including ignition off put the black meter lead to ground and with the red lead test the harness wires, one will have +12v on it, note that down.
With the ignition on test the other wires, one will now have +12v on it, note that down.
With the ignition on also turn on the headlights then check the green wires, on one of them will now have +12v on it, note that down (that dims the stereo lights at night when the dash lights are on)
The other green will be the turn on signal to the sub amp under the seat
The speaker wire can be identified by lifting the speaker grill off the top of each speaker (prise them gently and they will pop off) then you should be to see the colours (you may need to unscrew the speaker and lift it out to get a clear view of them, they are often wrapped in foam)

Re: 1986 MK1A Radio\Cassette Wiring
You've given me a lot of valuable help to try and sort this out. I will methodically sort out the colors on the vehicle harness - I am not to worried that I can't sort that out. It is getting a radio to work. It's funny - even the page from the green shop manual is not very helpful.
Thanks again for taking the effort to help me sort this out.
