Max lending me a tool reminded me...
I have the official IMOC-UK 4AGE shim bank and valve adjustment tool! If anyone wants to borrow it.
You need it for adjusting valve clearances. You can check them with just feeler gauges.

Tim Cartledge is after it at the moment
Re: shim bank and valve adjustment tool
Just out of curiosity who does the shim bank belong to? I was under the impression it was the mk1 club, the post mentioned IMOC and the shims were donated by individuals.
Re: shim bank and valve adjustment tool
It doesn't 'belong' to anyone. Vashy bought the spacer tool that comes with it but there's a gentlemans agreement to pass it on to the next person who needs it and put all your unused shims in it.

I have a whole bunch of shims & buckets in the garage that can be added if need be... Where do I send them? Vashy?

Like wise, I have a bunch of shims and buckets which I will pitch in. Just need to rebuild my spare head so I know what I dont need first.
Re: shim bank and valve adjustment tool
Sure, you can send them to me. (address pm'd G)
Or, watch out for this thread and send them to whoever has them next.
Getting a nice little collection now! (:

What's the postage price getting up to John? Do you think we might have to thin the numbers out a bit to reduce the cost.
Re: shim bank and valve adjustment tool
Might be worth reducing the number of buckets as it will be these taking up space/weight.
Can never have too many a selection of shims though

Don't think there were any buckets in there at all when I had it Garrick. They don't tend to be needed.

I dug out the shim bank and it tips the scales at 1340g. Then I spotted Karl's Special Delivery sticker on it for £7.75.
Re: shim bank and valve adjustment tool
Just a thought on this, to reduced costs for people, I need to redo my head, I am happy to remove the cams to do the shims on mine.
If we (royal we) find out the shims we need, put the wrong sized ones in a jiffy bag, with a SAE(Jiffy bag) and sent it to the custodian of the shim-bank with our requests.
This will mean no postage costs for the shim bank holder, and less cost for us that need shims, and the shim bank will keep being replenished. Also, if anything happens to the return post only a few shims will be lost instead of them all.
If the bank gets low, then maybe a 1 for 1 policy could be implimented.
I have possibly got enough for my job (I have 2 spare heads) but it would be nice to know I can get the missing ones if I need to.
Just an idea.......
Regards
MATT!

Sounds like a fine idea Matt.
John are you ok to do this mate? If not I would be happy to be the 'shim keeper'.

nice idea!
right, I broke out the shim bank to see what lurked inside. Someone had already put different shims in different bags so, this is what we have:
2.68
2.72
2.73
2.76-2.80 - 4 shims in this bag
2.81-2.85 - 7 shims
2.86-2.90 - loads. really loads, 18 and there are only 16 valves!
2.91-2.95 - loads. should be able to get any size you want in these ranges
2.96-300 - loads
3.03
3.05
3.09
3.10
3.10
plus of course the magical tool that lets you change shims without taking the cams out (it's a bit fiddly but it works! You only need to take the cam covers off)
Next 18 shims weighs 205g, so 11.4g per shim.
The magic tool weighs 275.
Thanks Chris I'm cool for now! although if I bu88er off travelling again I will remember to take you up on this offer!

Re: shim bank and valve adjustment tool
Great I may be needing to post some shims soon
Does anyone have a link to a picture of the elusive shim tool? I wouldn't mind having a go at making a home-brew version

ka-ching (:
The 'S' shaped bit is all you really need; I actually found it easier to push the valves down with the cams by turning the crank.

Re: shim bank and valve adjustment tool
Hi, I know there's been no posts on here for a while but I was just wondering if the shim bank is still about somewhere? Would be very useful right now as pretty much my all clearances are out
