Right,

I've got an early MK1 and guess what? It didn't take long before 5th gear decided it had had enough and now is forever popping out under acceleration or lifting off.

I can hold it in with no problem, but have you ever tried going down the M6 at 80mph holding the gearstick with one hand, smoking a fag with the other and steering with your knee?
![](./images/smilies/spacer.gif)
Well it is of course possible and though i've got the hang of that new driving technique i'd much rather 5th gear stayed in of its own accord.

From what Mark and I worked out
![](./images/smilies/spacer.gif)
(we stripped my old shagged SC box) the wear must be in the fork and/or the hub.
![](./images/smilies/spacer.gif)
So we have ordered these two items from our local MrT.
![](./images/smilies/spacer.gif)
Fork was
![](./images/smilies/spacer.gif)
£20 and hub is
![](./images/smilies/spacer.gif)
£50.
![](./images/smilies/spacer.gif)
Obviously we don't know if this will cure it but i'm rather hoping so as we are expecting that the fork has worn which is allowing the hub to move around which will cause it to jump out of gear.

Tomorrow i'm going to use the force of the
![](./images/smilies/spacer.gif)
'Jedi Beard' and have a go at it.
![](./images/smilies/spacer.gif)
Really hope it works because this could potentially save a lot of people quite a lot hassle.
![](./images/smilies/spacer.gif)
Because 5th gear is on the end of the input/output shaft you can take the casing off with the gearbox still in situ.
![](./images/smilies/spacer.gif)
Obviously am going to take lots of photos and write up etc.
![](./images/smilies/spacer.gif)
Fingers crossed! Am actually looking quite forward to it as did an oil change today and my bearding need went very much unsatisfied.

.
![](./images/smilies/spacer.gif)
oil changes are just too easy these days.
