Bummer!
Coming back from a 60 mile journey today I came off the dual carriageway to come home and wasn't *really* feeling the power.
A 20-25mph half mile drive to my door step and I'm hear some pretty nasty "claka claka claka" noises from behind my head, silent on idle, rising with RPM.
Background of the car is a late 1999 MR-S Turbo (Phoenix Power kit) with ~41k on the clock, mostly in KM's.
Checked the oil level, and it was low. Very low.
Topped up with nearly 2 litres and still the noise is very much there.
I've compiled a short video to illustrate said noises but my hunch is bottom end failure.
The car drives ok, boosts ok also.

Couple of things I'd say.
The CEL is nothing regarding this problem and there is audible noise from the exhaust since fitting a cat back on for the MOT.
Thanks to anyone who can shed any light on the matter.
Rowland

Ooo nasty, sounds like big ends gone/spun bearing for sure - rebuild time I'd wager :/
I take it 'very very low' and '2 litres' means it was well below the min level on the dipstick? Surprised you didn't get oil pressure light on.

I'm inclined to agree on the big end / bearing failure.
I suspect a phone call to Rogue in the morning will be in order to discuss potential possibilities...

Sounds very much like the big ends have gone, and badly too.

exactly the same as mine, it was big ends with me
Re: [Mk3] [Turbo] Think I've broken my engine *video inside* 1ZZ Turbo
Sorry to hear that the engine might be dead, but you cant blame the car!!!
Oh well, a rebuild will give you 100% confidence in it again!

yup defo the big ends mate, it'll get wrose aswell, mine sounded like that then when i got home kaput completley gone, sold it 2 Rogue who turned it into a race car
My 1st MR2 wasnt worth the rebuild, now on my 3rd would defo get this one rebuilt

Sorry Rowland, to hear/see this That deffo sounds big ends to me. Although when I did the big ends on mine (twice), I noticed a significant loss of power.
It's not too difficult a job changing them and can be done within a day easily (so long as you have the replacement bearings at hand).
The crank needs to be checked for damage too. Changing the crank is a bit more involved and could get a bit costly

sorry to hear that fella, 100% bottom end though, shame mate,
anything i can do to help give me a call.

Re: [Mk3] [Turbo] Think I've broken my engine *video inside* 1ZZ Turbo
Well it all sounds quite conclusive that the big ends are bu99ered.
Sad really as the car hasn't even clocked 30,000 miles yet *sigh*
For now I've taken the car off the road until a replacement 1ZZ can be sourced at a reasonable price. Rogue will be carrying out the engine change.
If anyone knows of a 1ZZ for sale, please give me a shout.
I've sourced a replacement car on the cheap, diesel too so MEGA mpg and a tow bar for towing the race-car.
Every cloud and all that!

Re: [Mk3] [Turbo] Think I've broken my engine *video inside* 1ZZ Turbo
Surely a bottom end rebuild is going to be cheaper than replacement engine?
Any idea how or why have the big ends failed on such a new engine?
Ours failed due to oil starvation & high RPM on track.
Has an oil return been blocked or was the levels just too low? Or was it soething else?
Regardless, still gutting

Rowland,
Doesnt sound too bad from the video!
Ive heard alot worse that have been lucky and salvaged with new big end shells.
I would definately not even start it anymore, drop the sump off and drop the rod caps off and inspect
You might get away with just re-shelling it, just use some plastiguage to check all the way round the crank journals and if in spec re-shell and see how you go!
You've got nothing to lose and may save you re-building it or replacing it
Oil starvation is a biatch!
Re: [Mk3] [Turbo] Think I've broken my engine *video inside* 1ZZ Turbo
I used to have a Merc 190, the oil feed pipe came adrift and stopped lubricating the camchain. When they took it apart the big ends were $hagged too.
It sounded just like your car.
I didn't notice any problem until I popped round to pick my mate up in my 'new' car and he said "didn't know it was a diesel" (it wasn't ).
Have to agree, from my limited experience, it sounds very much like the big ends....

Re: [Mk3] [Turbo] Think I've broken my engine *video inside* 1ZZ Turbo
agreed with just changing the big end bearings, cant see the point at all in getting a whole new engine
Re: [Mk3] [Turbo] Think I've broken my engine *video inside* 1ZZ Turbo
If it hasnt done too much damage, you can just replace the big end bearings and shells.
Re: [Mk3] [Turbo] Think I've broken my engine *video inside* 1ZZ Turbo
Bottom end failure on a 1ZZ engine is usually a symptom of the problem, not the cause. You won't get away with just changing the bearings, you need to address the problem that caused the rapid oil usage in the first place.

Blimey, post revival!
Car is having a brand new engine fitted by it's new owner incidentally.

As the new owner, I thought I'd add a slight update on this.
As per Patrick's thread above, the big ends are a symptom not a cause so the car now has a new engine - got it in and running today. A few final bits to tidy up and it'll be back on the road by next weekend
Thought I'd take a quick video on my phone to show how bad the big ends were:-

Kept it as a turbo or back to NA?
