If your getting a 404 error it means that the browser is most likely pointing at the wrong webserver. Which wither points to DNS or an iffy local hosts file.

Do ping "www.imoc.co.uk" and post back the ip address.

Aaah, now we're getting somewhere. That address is wrong, the IP address should be

Code: Select all

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: www.imoc.co.uk
Address: 213.171.219.195

Did you do Neil Johnson's hack to add www.imoc.co.uk to your local 'hosts' file? If so, remove that entry as it points to the old NT server we were hosted from.

OK, at least that shows why its not working, the next step is to find out exactly where the problem is.

For the next test, open a cmd shell again (start -> run -> cmd -> enter), and type "nslookup www.imoc.co.uk" and report back what that says

I really only need the bits i have highlighted in red.

While we are tracing this fault, it would be handy to get the ouput of your "ipconfig /all" screen. From a cmd shell, just type the following...

ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt

then email me the c:\ipconfig.txt file so I can have a look.

OK, the fact that nslookup is correct means that your DNS settings are correct. The fact that your ping setting is wrong means that your local hosts file is probably wrong.

Open the your c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts file (Start -> Run - > "notepad c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts") and look for a line like this...

213.171.219.195 www.imoc.co.uk

If you find one comment it out completely by putting a "#" at the font.

#213.171.219.195 www.imoc.co.uk

Then save the file and try accessing the website again.

Was hoping this would solve my longstanding problem of accessing http://www.borland.com - my ISP (Tiscali, who are hopeless BTW) could only tell me to put in the IP address directly into my web browser and couldn't explain why it didn't work.

The Windows file in question though is pretty much empty so it didn't help.

Also, when if I connect via dial-up (a different ISP too) - the Borland site works. So I figure that my computer isn't at fault :?
