Sparkplugs looking wet inside.

Post by ElvisRockVinyl »

Hey guys

I just wondering what your thoughts are on these plugs that I took out last night's on me gen 2 3SGE.

Some issues I've had with my gen 2 over the past few years that is slowly getting worse, one is when I start it from cold it will chuck out a load of smoke then clear, if I take the rpm up its still clear but when I snap the throttle take it up to 4k then let off smoke shoots out I've noticed the top of the pistons especially cy 2 and 3 are caked in wet crud the other 2 look reasonably clean, compression test done and all 4 are well above spec, could this be valve seals?

What colour is the smoke?

do the cylinders smell of fuel when you take the spark plugs out?

If it is water/coolant i would say headgasket issue. If this is a rev1/2 then it'll have the paper/fibre head gasket. rev3+ it'll be metal

If it is the stem seals i would imagine it would be oil in the cylinder.

It all depends what kind of wet they are.. difficult to tell from that picture

Just an update to this

Replaced valve stem seals, to say they worn was an understatement! Practically fell to bits as soon as I touched them especially the exhaust side, fitted new oil seals all round as all but the oil pump seal was leaking, timing belt and did valve clearances too now engine runs spot on, must be 20 years since I've done valve seals, just shows that having a car laid up for 4 years doesn't do them any good, Mot Friday so here's hoping, really glad to get my 2 back on the road……really missed it.

Used the rope method as didn't fancy taking the head off, if anyone is interested or needs to do this job then I take pics of all the work I do to my 2, below

Woohoo passed Mot this morning no advisory's finally the 2 is back on the road, 3 months of hard work getting my 2 back to its former glory after being off the road a number of years has paid off, really surprised it passed emissions the amount of oil that's gone though the exhaust is no body's business.

Just have to take it gentle now for a few hundred miles let everything bed it self in again after some major engine work, valve work, timing belt, all new brake system and clutch, it bit annoying as I know it's saying come on I want to go! I can feel it on the throttle, but can't grr.
