Recommend engine oil?

Post by vipermk2 »

Hi all

I recently brought a MR2 MK1B NA in T-bar form last weekend and loving every moment of it. And it has a healthy long MOT on it :)

It needs new engine oil as the current oil is low. My plan is to remove the old unknown engine oil and start using the new one.
But I just needed some recommendations on what other people are using on theres?
It seems like anything with 5W30 is the real winner right? I was looking at the Mobil Super 3000 X1 Formula FE 5W-30.

I always used 10w-40 Magnatec. It's an old engine which would have been designed to use 20w-50.

5w-30 is a bit thin so you'll probably burn through it.

I used Fuchs 15w-50 in the 4AGE when I had my AE86.

I use Castrol Edge 5W-40. I don't burn any oil.

Some time ago someone thought that Magnetic got very thin with age, which is why I switched to fully synthetic. But if you've had no problems Lauren then maybe they were mistaken. Magnetic is certainly cheaper, and regular changes of cheaper oil is probably better than longer changes of fancy oil anyway.
