TYRE SIZES - WHAT TYRES FIT WHAT RIMS - STICKY PLEASE

245/40/16 = -4mm less than stock RR / not sure of recommendation?

Nobody even makes tyres in those sizes, or as far as I can tell anyway.

How bad would it be to say use a 245/45/16 as they are actually available.

Patience will help the response.

What suspension do you have? A 40/45 profile on those widths will be way bigger than stock rolling radius and probably foul the arch liners when turning towards full lock, and rub your arch lips.

I would suggest 35 profiles for front and rear, which is almost bang on stock rolling radius. You should double check if 235/35/17 and 255/35/17 and suitable for 8 and 9", although I imagine they would be. They'll be bloody expensive mind you, don't skimp on tyre choice for width!!

As long as you won't have arch lip issues I should think it would be fine.

Ok, I have had a dig through the KB and found this old thread - but the question I can't find an answer to is this;

I have a set of decent rp01's, Front 16"x7" ET35 Rear - 16"x8" ET38, I read that you 'can' fit 245's on the 8" rim, but how wollowy would it make the car feel? Like melted marshmallows?

I can't find many threads on people using 16" wheels, and searching for tyres I can see why, but i'd like to put 235/50's on the rears but would like to know if anyone has done it before and regretted it. I can't find any 235/45's, so i'd just have to be aware of the speedo change.

I guess i'll try and get 205's or maybe 215's for the front, but any opinion if that will detract from the steering?

Refer to the tyre manufacturer fitment table. Unless you're buying xxxx tier tyres, you'll be able to find a fitment guide on their website. Recommended wheel widths will vary depending on diameter and aspect ratio as well.

A good setup on 16x7/16x8 is 205/45R16 front and 225/45R16 rear. Any reason you're after a 245? Not many choices around on 16's in that size. You're better off with a good 225 like an AD08R.

Was more of a 'what if' question on the 245's as I was looking on a calculator site that said it was the maximum possible, but wondered how that would be in reality.

I was thinking of 235 on the rear rather than 225 in a bid to keep the same difference from 225/195 rear/front standard. (with 205 fronts)

That and nice big fat tyres on the rear look good to me.

You need to look at the specific charts for that tyre, not some generic website. For example for a Toyo T1R in 245/45R16 they suggest a 7.5-9.0J with 8.0J being the preferred fitment. Other manufacturers may suggest something different for their tyres.

Hi all, quick question......I have a MK2 MR2 and am looking to put some new wheels on. I've been offered a set of 18", they currently have 235/40/18 tyres on but have been told 225/35/18 would fit. Would that make them acceptable for the front?

^ from a driving point of view i'd imagine that wouldn't feel very good to drive.

SW's tramline at the best of times (well each and every one of them I have did), putting a really wide tyre like that on the front would make it worse IMO, that and the rear aren't much bigger so you'll be losing the staggered setup as well.

There's hardly any weight in the front of an SW, putting tyres on that wide increases your chances of aquaplaning i'd say.

But thats just what I think...

Someone else may be able to answer if they'll rub or not, I was saying they will probably make your car terrible/unsafe to drive.

'Tramlining' is where your car follows any groove in the road, say you get a lot of heavy vehicles along a road - they will eventually make 'tracks' along the road, SW's love to get into those tracks and follow them, that tram lining. Put the wrong size tyres on and you can wear a conductors hat and yell 'all aboard'.
