I've just ran a compression test and I'm 200PSI across the board, which seems good, but I'm using a lot of oil and showing all the signs of stuck/bad oil control rings.
I simply don't have the budget for a replacement 1zz-fe from ebay or to have a garage recondition the engine for me. Does anyone know another source of engines or would be willing to help out with space to do the work in the Bristol area?
Cheers
Good compression but using oil - can anyone help in the Bristol area?

Well the cheap engines will be on ebay. You're not going to find any cheaper than there.

How much oil is it using? Hasn't Toyota said up to 1litre per 1k is normal ? Even though that is not normal.

Yeah, I don't really understand the Toyota figures either. I'm going from high to low on the dipstick (which I think is approx 1L ?) in just over a full tank. About 4-500 miles ish.
I'm going to try a thicker oil but others have said it doesn't really seem to help things. I've also read that it's worth checking the PCV valve but I'm not hopeful really.

Well I've been told I could maybe fix it with just new rings and a head gasket. Head bolts can generally be re-used. Solution to clean up the pistons and oil and coolant.
£250ish all in?

Think you'll be lucky for that chap.

So i presume your professional advisor didn't tell you:
that new rings should never be fitted without honing the bores also? And to hone the bores the engine needs to be stripped to a bare block.
that the head should be surface ground before fitting new head gasket
the head bolts are stretch bolts and should not be re-used.
I'd say your advice has come from someone who is talking out of his blunt end.
Two choices:
1) Accept the oil consumption and live with it.
2) Deal with the problem properly else you will be disappointed.

Sorry, yes he did mention it would need a hone as well but he also said Toyota state tolerances for the head bolts and they can often be reused. He's a parts supplier so I don't think it's in his interest to say that unless true.
Also wouldn't a tolerance go for the head/block surfaces?
You guys are right I know, not sure what to do

How quick you want to sort it out I will have a 1zz out of sandras car in about 2/3 months as going 2zz engine will be bare but you welcome to it , we done a 1898mile trip and it used 1/2 lt of oil .Patrick

Sorry, but IMHO whoever said you could reuse a stretch bolt is talking out of his freckle as our Aussie cousins are fond of saying The whole point of a stretch bolt is just that - when torqued up to the right setting it stretches a little under pressure. Once removed, bin it and get new ones, otherwise you run the real risk of the pressures of re-torqueing and then running the engine causing the bolt to shear which will cause a lot more damage to a running engine than just doing it right in the first place. If money is the issue at the moment then I really suggest you just sit tight till you have enough put by to get the work done right - that way it only gets done once and the end result should then last Best of luck getting it sorted though - never fun having engine issues like this to get resolved
Cheers,
Mark

Hi Patrick, I might take you up on that offer, thanks.
What age and mileage is the engine and how much would you want for it?

I have a very good facelift engine done around 70,000 miles sitting here with a new clutch already fitted. Was going to put it in my roadster but ended up breaking it. See my thread for photos and price.
