This morning I asked over on MR2OC whether you could split apart a genuine rev5 spoiler safely for respraying. I recently bought one and the seller told me there was some form of ratchet mechanism on the pivot bolt that would come to pieces if you took it apart, hence Toyota's warning note within the end caps:
When a couple of people said they had their spoilers sprayed in component parts, I decided to rip mine apart to find out one way or another.
And the answer is, there is NOTHING special about the pivot bolt in the slightest! Here's the proof:

thank god you didn't "damege" it

Well, it was a worry
Re: [Mk2] [Generic] Rev5 spoiler disassembly - Toyota were paranoid!
The only "unusual" thing is the omnidirectional screw at one end It's simply designed to do up, and not undo. Once you get passed that, there's nothing to it (as you've found out)

Why did they even bother making it adjustable, really...

I dunno, but I'd love to see someone put a servo in each end cap to create a completely pointless DRS system with it

It has been done! A guy on the TSS forum has done it!

Re: [Mk2] [Generic] Rev5 spoiler disassembly - Toyota were paranoid!
I'm all for ingenuity in modification, but that is a bit ludicrous
Re: [Mk2] [Generic] Rev5 spoiler disassembly - Toyota were paranoid!
It worked very well so we decided to do a speed run and try flipping it up and down
40 all good
50 all good
60 all good
70 starting to rise slowly
This was not considered that much of a problem as corner speeds rarely get this high.
Kinda prooves how pointless this was- as soon as the minimum speed to produce any downforce is reached (ie when the mechanism struggles to work due to the force on it)- it actually struggles to work...and this is discounted in the tests because corner speeds in the car aren't that high...ie this car never goes fast enough to generate downforce from the spoiler anyway
Gotta love the effort put into it though
Re: [Mk2] [Generic] Rev5 spoiler disassembly - Toyota were paranoid!
TBH, for the road, I don't know why you'd have anything other than the flattest setting on the rev5 spoiler - you're rarely going round a corner fast enough for the difference to be significant, so why add drag to the car by increasing the blade's angle?
That said, having a switch in the cabin to remotely change the angle is almost worth it for how cool it would be!
Well, provided you're not achieved it with a push-rod through the boot lid

You'd need a pretty good bit of kit to erect it at 70+ i'd have thought.
Maybe more worth while with a BGW...

That's the whole point- if it takes effort to push it up it prooves the wing is actually working, if it's easy to erect then it ain't generating any down force!
But it would be funny sitting in traffic and preparing your DRS for a hard launch at the traffic lights

It only proves it is creating drag.

wish i knew this before i put mine in the body shop they took mine apart to fix and paint as for some reason there was stress fractures in the underside of the blade
the bodyshop then told me it was due to the adjuster bolts and they removed them and replaced them with some other type of bot which i dont know what

You could be right- the only way to tell would be to measure downwards force on the spoiler's front mount points, and on the mounting point for the actuator arms
Re: [Mk2] [Generic] Rev5 spoiler disassembly - Toyota were paranoid!
Back on topic, I just got quoted £175 and £250 for spraying up my spoiler. I was expecting £100 +/- £20. Does that sound a bit steep?
Re: [Mk2] [Generic] Rev5 spoiler disassembly - Toyota were paranoid!
yea quite tbh
mine was £110 to strip paint and re-build/re-fit
