from my experience with many friends' evos (ranging from evo5 to evo8), they need to have 360-370bhp running 1.5bar or more to keep up with an mr2 with breathing mods, boost controller and remap. a 390-400bhp evo will pull comfortably, but not like a bullet.

transmission losses are a biatch 8)

My brother Evo IX MR FQ360 pulls on my Rev 3 tubby with no problem at all. Then again, it does have about 100 more ponies and torques than my humble MR2.

Having owned both cars (currently own Evo 8 with approx 370bhp) I can speak from experience. My MR2 before I sold it was mapped and running a confirmed 280bhp at the wheels. This is well over 300 fly. Before I had my evo remaped when it was running stock 280-300bhp (fq300 spec) I have no doubth that my MR2 was quicker in a straight line. Now my Evo has stage 1 mods and a remap it def feels quicker than the 2 in a straight line. I wouldnt dare launch my evo now unless I wanted to kiss the clutch goodbye. Remember guys its not just about the straight line speed - My evo (with R888 tyres) sticks around corners like you wouldnt believe. You would have to be pretty stupid to try and keep up with one around the bends.

I do enjoy the Evo V's MR2T discussions... but generally they go through the same motions :

Is it / isn't it quicker
Power to weight
Drivetrain losses
......then handling

MR2 although will have similar mechanical grip, its a much harder car to drive at the limit / over the limit... AWD's are amazing !! I drive my BMW X5 down back roads like a scooby / evo, its idiot proof.. and theres no doubting the cronic weather we have, my MR2 would be nowhere in sight.

I love the Evo's and would consider buying one for this no brainer driving advantage...but I dont like the attitude the drivers of Evo's develop ( Rory excluded ).. almost similar to the stigma associated with BMW M3's. I speak to many owners and as you can expect the biasness, the small talk is consistant where it soon degrades with condescending and rude comments.

All down to personal preferances really.. chuck enough money at either, they'll go fast.. the Evo is easier to control, the MR2 commands more respect.

Personally, what I enjoy doing is wiping the smile off a couple of Evo owners faces around where I live, the norm always initiated by the evo owners for the spirited effort..... wont say much other than crap old blue MR2 can still hold its own ( FQ400's inclusive )...

Tbh I always found it was scooby owners that tried it on when I had the MR2 and unlike the Evo's most of the Scoobies were pish 220bhp boggo spec WRX's

Unless the evos putting out 350plus there wont be much in it I've seen it many a time

Everyone just assumes the evo is quicker I remember my brothers GT4 take an evo 8 320 and a 6rs (on a straight). His was running with breathing mods and a blitz ecu. They wouldnt buy it at the local evo specialists (they did hate the gt4 tho after taking 10hours to do a clutch  )
