MR2 Mk3 special edition in Red?

Post by sinead13 »

Hi everyone,

new here and just got my mk3 last week. Traded in my "shopping trolley" Polo with absolutely no regrets! First sporty car i've owned and love it.

My question is - does anyone know if there was a special edition of the mk3 made? A friend thinks this was available in red with the hard top, modified alloys and extras like leather seats.

Mine is chilli red with hard top, modified alloys, black leather, CD, air con, 2001.

Will get some pics up soon :D

Cheers, Sinead

sounds good!

I am no expert on the mk3s but the only "specials" i know of are

VM180 Widebody - circa 100 made by TRD
TF300 - The Final 300, each individually badged as a count down to the last 300 MR2s off the production line!

There may be others

There is a special 'red' edition. It wasn't a red car though! It had red leather trimming on the steering wheel, and a red foldable top. So if you've a black folding roof it's not one of those. :thumleft:

Also had a badge that said "Red" on it IIRC.

Lol, that reporter can't add up:
Where Toyota will ask you to part with £17,500 before you take possession of a standard MR2, The MR2 Red costs £18,000.

Its this £850 premium that holds the key when choosing between the two.

So £18000 - £17500 = £850!

I had no idea the red edition existed either, it looks really nice. Toyota seem to like doing colour-coded special editions recently, you can get Aygo Black and Blue editions and I'm sure there were editions of the Yaris like that too.

All the Aygos are special editions in so far as each colour comes with something special you can't get on other colours, eg the Blue has coloured interior. Clever way of keeping resale values high, too.

Exactly 100 were made. Don't forget the Modellista Caserta:

and the Zagato VM180:

Again, 100 of each were made.

Hey Sinead and welcome to the club. My girlfriend has the 'red' edition as mentioned and it's a lovely car. Red and Sable go really well together. They didn't paint the calipers to match but it looks better with them done ... piccies in my thread titled 'opinions' or in my garage if you're interested. I painted the calipers for her birthday...next year she may get a TTE twin exhaust. Romantic eh? Well better than just red roses.
