can you tell me why stock is better than an uprated one then??? or what the advantage/disadvantage of having a 1.4mm steel gasket in there???

The ideal HG thickness for good squish is 1.0mm. On a Rev1/2, this may be a bit too small (this might give too high a CR), but I would certainly not want to go for anything thicker than 1.2mm. Affecting the squish is just not worth it.

Thicker is not stronger (not the way you're thinking, anyway). The fact that they are metal gaskets on the Rev3 onwards, and they're of as good a quality as HKS ones, why pay £200+ when you can pay £30? Also, as Andy says, the thicker the HG, the more you get away from the ideal squish which affects the efficiency of the combustion process.

I see from your spec that you've got a Rev1? If so, then it's no suprise your HG has gone as it's a material-type one, not metal. I'd suggest either trying a 1.05mm standard Rev3 HG and adapting like AndyF has done, or going for the 1.2mm TTE ST185 HG. They're both as good as each other in terms of quality and reliability, although the TTE one will be closer to your current one in terms of thickness, etc. The only thing is that I'm struggling to get someone to supply me with these. Maybe try Fensport?

Less of the old, mate (OK, you're right, my hands are up!) :D

I've been working hard lately, so haven't had much chance to come on here. But I hope to spend a bit more time on here now...

I think Chris sells the Cometic HGs? That's what some Evo owners use. I don't know what the quality is like for the 3SGTE, as I've not seen one, but then again, when I examined the quality of the good Toyota or TTE ones, I didn't need to look any further.

Nothing to forgive, mate. The TTE (Toyota Team Europe, ie the former WRC Rally Team, now the F1 team) ones have been proven on the WRC Celica engines, so at least you know they can be relied upon. I'm trying to get them myself, but in the meantime, why not try Fensport?

The TTE ST185 1.2mm gasket should be around £100-110, ISTR. OK, it's more than the stock ST205/Rev3 HG (about £30-35?), but it's bolt on fitment for a Rev1/2. Incidentally, get your head checked to ensure it's not cracked or warped. When fitting a metal gasket of any type, the sealing surfaces of the components you're trying to mate should be perfect.

LOL. No thanks, Dean! :)

Expect a biggish bill to have the work done. I've heard of a few people that have had to pay in excess of £1k for all the work to be done, although to be fair, some had the cambelt done at the same time. It's not a cheap job for most. :(
