[Mk2] [Turbo] Twin Coolers? intercooler/chargecooler

Post by skipp123 »

ok guys wonder if this is possible

after working on my mates 2.1 zeetec escort rst running 380bhp last night i was looking round the engine bay and hes designes and fabricated a bit of custom work which is

a huge front mount which then runs into a large chargecooler he says the intake temps never go above 24''c

made me wonder if i could..................

run my pp intercooler with water injection, then have a thore barrel chargecooler in the boot all hooked up to eachother???

any pics of the escort?
sounds an interesting machine =P~
what sort of turbo/boost is your mate running?
was it set up like this from the start?
or did he have either one to start and temps where too high so added the other?

hes running 1.4bar atm will be going to around the 1.7 mark with new head and tubular manifold

no pics of it as hes designed it himself and doesnt want to see x1000 other escorts with same set up

so basicly was thinking

turbo pipe into pp intercooler
other pipe from pp intercooler rerouted into the boot mount chargecooler
into chargecooler out the other side and into the throttle bodie??

why did he need a CC and an IC for 380 hp ? sounds wrong somehow (not saying it is, but it sounds overly complicated and heavy from what it needs to be) - at 380hp he should be able to find 1 chargecooler, or one intercooler up to the job. now if he's done it just because he can, fair enough

Sounds like alot of overkill and way too much pipework for me. would probably cause serious lag as well?
The pressure drop between the turbo and the inlet would be massive?

a 2.1 ZVH is a Zetec bottom end with a CVH head, they use this as its more tourque, it is so hard to get 380bhp out of that setup no matter what, be interested to see it :)

so yeh if he is getting 380 out of that set up it would need to serious cooling

I always thought it was the zetec head so it makes it a 16v?

no no, if it done properly it is the zetec lump and cvh head, either 1.9 or 2.1

why would it be more lag than the likes of this?? all it would have extra is about a ft more tubing where it would go from turbo into intercooler then back into the chargecooler

The reason it would have more lag is because it would have to pass through two cores slowing the airflow down quite considerably.

differance in lag would be hazzard a guess maybe 500rpm on a say gt3071r and a decent map?? thats nothing if the charge is going to be ubbar cool..?

Lol, GT3071 probably doesnt come onto boost till about 3,500rpm so with additional 500rpm that's 4k rpm's before you have full boost.

Rather you than me put it that way :thumleft:

still over the top tbh.

i think this would be a better idea..

2 x SMIC's (medium capicity ones ie xs-power) , 1 mounted either side of the engine in the air ducts- so the N/s vent will also occupy an Ic. then at the turbo, use a 'T' piece (but obv shaped for flow) to T off to each ic. then bring them back into a 'T' at the TB. Make sure the IC piping used is around 1.75/2" in diameter, and both sides have as equal length pipe as possible, so as to keep the overall pipe volume over the 2 sides equal to that of 1 smic.

This will give you 2 smic's, with minimal loss in spool.

As for the air filter, this is where a toms scoop and airbox could come in handy!

Btw... look at this pic again...

Image

if you consider the depth of a good SMIC and how far the boost pipes have to travel from the turbo to the bottom of the SMIC, and consider how many bends there are in the pipe -slowing down the air flow... then look at how direct the flow is on that TMIC setup.. there is probally only an Inch or 2 in extra pipework over a SMIC! also remember, a PP SMIC is about 7" thick.. the average boot mount ic that people use are only 3-4"

Yes that would be a great way of doing it. You can never have too much intercooling and there will not be much lag at all
