Hi I just bought some Hks vernier pulleys and wandered if anyone knows what the best timing degree advance or retard?

If anyone has a set fitted what setting are they one and how far off was your ignition timing etc?

Cheers

i found a guide setting from hks which said they had found 2 degrees advance on inlet and 8 degrees retard on exhaust, might need some fine tuning but should get you started.

Nice one mate saves some time on constant adjustment then run the car then adjust then run then (You know how it is).

Thanks

Then I wouldn't bother mate till your ready to put some cams in IMO.

Its alot of work for minimal gains IIRC, unless youve already got them on.

Yeah i agree. When you do get a set of HKS cams they will give you a recommended cam timing figure for each cam. I have found, as so have a few others i've spoke to that a couple more degrees (Between 2 - 4) advance from the reccomended ex cam setting picks up the spool and gives it more top end - but beware the idle is more lumpy with the ex cam advanced.

How much do you guys reckon I could get a set of cams for? Doesn't have to be hks but as long as they are a reputable make and will be worth it?

I dont fancy having to mess about too often with the timing so may aswell do the job lot and now is the best time as I have the engine in bits to do a bit of a rebuild!

Cheers

www.nengun.com is quite good on prices.

obviously you'll have to re-shim for the new cams.

have a search there should be loads of info on here about the hks cams and also on www.mr2oc.com

Just got a standard ct26 in but had been advised to go for a gt2860rs unit so may go with that if I'm gonna get a better response from the right cams (I want the car to have a good low to mid range power so the turbo needs to spool up quick).

thanks

i don't know the guys overseas found some good power increases by playing with the standard cam timing, i believe the retard on the exhaust seriously helps, sound similar to the hks settings you've got.

If you've got them might as well fit them, not hard to install and set up. be good to see the actual gains before fitting some larger units.

The GT2860rs is also best suited to the standard VE's of the standard head and cam's so playing with standard cam timing would make the most of that turbo and head set up. You don't need huge cams etc for this turbo as they usually do more harm than good on small fast responce turbo's
