Cracked cylinder 3 ring land :UPDATE:

Post by Sbsoulby »

Anyone had a similar issue?
Looks like an engine out rebuild time, I'm just pondering wether it's worth doing, it's a rev 3 turbo, in decent shape, minimal rust etc so I guess it's a car to stay on the road, just trying to justify the expense

Running more than standard power I assume?

It's a known weak spot. Good excuse to drop some forged pistons in.

Actually not, it's all standard, never looked to have more power through it, seems strange it's gone, the engine only has 72.000 miles on it
I had a knock issue so I assume that's when it's happened, the car at the moment has a lumpy idle bit like a Subaru so did a leak test and yep, leaking

What forged pistons are available that people are running?

Some get lucky... some don't... some bring it on themselves.

Sorry to hear about the ringland though. I've been through that pain myself :(

Did you get to the bottom of the knock issue? That may have caused the ringland to fail.

I changed the knock sensor and reset it, checked the timing and changed the ignition, I didn't drive it too hard for a while to see if the sensor would go or if the code came back, it didn't so I guessed it was just a one off occurance

As above... usually stock engines never let go on standard boost -not ringlands anyway. Must have some serious knock. You really will need to monitor that.

Wossner 8.0:1 for me :thumleft:

Get the block checked out, hopefully just a light hone. if you can use 86mm pistons dont do larger tha 0.5mm overbore.

99 as standard while I've owned it and yeah the timing was checked once the new sensor was put in, 10 degrees

it really is worth having this repaired. the value of a broken engine or a car with a broken engine is much lower so destroying a car due to a broken piston seems mad.

if having to fix it puts you off owning then, after fixing it, you could sell for decent money. breaking it for parts would be a crying shame and prob not make the money you hope.

The engine is going to have to come out, if you can't so the work then take it to an MR2 garage as other lesser garages will charge for their time working out what the specialist already knows.

Good luck!

Oil pump?

Where you getting quoted for the full toyota oem gasket kit? Also is there a hg on that list?

I am at a similar point with engine out only difference being mine was running fine but had a stripped thread on the exhaust so removed everything to get to it and replace some old seals.

Wasnt going to go forged either but may look at that as time goes on.

All them prices are from Paul at tcb and that gasket kit includes the headgasket, seemed pretty cheap but he told me it was genuine Toyota

I think if your engine is out etc, for the little extra I think it's worth buying the forged stuff, bit of future proofing yourself if you did want to up power

Strange ...i asked paul a few weeks ago for a gasket kit and he said he didnt have any and didnt know when he was getting them in.
Also he gasket kit i needed was for rev 2 turbo and he said i had to buy the rev 3 hg seperate for an extra £50 or whatever it was.
Glad hes got them now then so its an option.

Do the clutch once, HD. I like mine. What compression ratio are you thinking about?

Consider grabbing replacement timing belt tensioner and idler bearings, and hydraulic tensioner. May not be needed but at least you know it's all good there. The belts themselves rarely fail of their own accord, it's usually a tension issue, failed tensioner, idler etc that takes the belt out.

Yeah they are all good ideas, it's all better to do while the engine is out I suppose, yvs are doing all the work so I'm leaving most of the technical parts to him

Also, Do not forget to do the coolant hoses under the turbo nicknamed the Hose from Hell, and Hose from Hell on earth [part # 16282-88480] & [16281-88461]

And while you are in there, i'd check the valve clearances. it's more than likely than most of your valves will be out of spec by now. Good idea to re-shim them. It's a slippery slope though, cause you'll want to to a leakdown test and maybe re-seat the valves by hand lapping them. I found all but one of mine were not sealing tight anymore. definitely recommended, but entirely up to you.
Might want to also do the idler pullies as suggested and definitely do a New tensioner for the belt.

OR just do a gen 4 swap  and rebuild this engine slowly.
GOod luck!

Ok cheers, I'll look into it all thanks,

I'm not keen on wossner pistons. Tcb put me off buying them and preferred the wiseco, also I'm hoping to stick to 86mm or as close to but thanks for
The offer
