I need some new tyres and seems options are very limited in 16" (must be on MSA 1A list).
I want to fit Bridgestone RE070 but they are only available in 225/45/r17, a little large for the front end of an MR2
Has anybody managed to make them fit? If so, did you have OEM struts or coilovers? What wheel offset did you use? Any arch modification needed?
I'll have to buy some 17" time to make this happen so will find some in whatever offset works
Thanks
Dan
[Mk2] [Generic] Bridgestone RE070 or other 225/45/17. Has anybody made them fit??

Any reason it has to be RE070's?
225/45R17 just won't fit under stock spring perches. With coilovers it depends on wheel offset, you'd need low 30's.

you can fit 225x45x17 under stock perches but depending on Tyre will depend on the er massaging required of the lower cup. 235x40 is shorter in height but obv a bit wider. It has been done by quite a few folks

OP said front tyres hence Gazza commenting on how they might not fit, without a percussion instrument anyway

I have read that you can use the gentle persuader to make room... I'll leave the for OP to decide. Not keen on smashing suspension bits for clearance myself!

yeah think about that for a second.. lets deform the cup that is holding the spring pressure, nothing could go wrong here
After having to change a friend's syspension early this year due to some light damage of a spring cup that later turned to rust and the spring made a break for freedom while he was driving!

oh I agree it's not something to rush into but it has been done without noted drawbacks. I'm pretty keen to try 235x40 myself as it's a shorter sidewall but obv wider for the inside of the arch. Anyways, slightly OT
Re: [Mk2] [Generic] Bridgestone RE070 or other 225/45/17. Has anybody made them fit??
Thanks all for responding.
Yeah I am not keen on deforming the spring seat. Other option is to switch from yellow Billie's to coilovers but as I'm happy with how the car is handling at the moment I'd prefer not make too many changes at once.
It doesn't have to be but I'm looking for the stickiest possible tyre on the MSA 1A list that is available in a size that'll fit on an MR2. Yoko AD08 used to work perfectly but they are no longer available, from experience RE070's come a close second.
Very frustrating that the majority of the high performance 1A tyres are not available in smaller sizes!
If you have any suggestions of another tyre I'd like to hear them. From what I've found looks like I'm limited to:
T-1R available in 16" - performance not competitive
Kumho ku31 available in 16" - performance unknown
Kumho ku39 available in 17" suitable for MR2 - performance unknown
Bridgestone RE070 + others, only available in 225/45R17
Anybody got an alternative road tyre they've found particularly grippy? Or have tried the kumho ku31 or ku39?
Thanks
Dan

I've used a KU31. Better than a T1R but it's hardly a super high performance tyre. Good for the money on the road.

AD08r available in 215x40x17 from Blackcircles and that'll fit no problem http://www.blackcircles.com/catalogue/y ... e=35841799
Re: [Mk2] [Generic] Bridgestone RE070 or other 225/45/17. Has anybody made them fit??
AD08R's aren't on 1A unfortunately.

Yeah that's the problem, currently have 225/45r16 AD08's and they're perfect ,the AD08 was on the 1A list but when it was replaced with the AD08R, the R was put on the 1B list.
Difficult to find a replacement that fits as our cars are designed for small diameter tyres

Can you get RE003s there?
I have these and they are available in 215/40R17. Magic tyres.

Damn. They sit between the S001 and Turanza in terms of price here in NZ.

If you are trying to stay 1a i quite enjoy the pilot sport 3s in 215 45 16 as a front tyre. There is a good amount of choice in this size (compared with 225). I have this and 235 40 17 hankook v12 EVo2 rears for autosolos.

Interesting, PS3 is a good tyre, I didn't find them in that size so had ruled them out, looks like it's because they're listed under Pilot Sport 3 "DT1" in that size.
I'll definitely consider them. It was looking like Kumho KU39 in 225/40/17 was going to be the best I could find for the front, but 215 pilot sports could be better.
Also interesting you're using 17" on the back, I've just bought some 17's as best rear tyre for me looks like a 235/40R17 Yokohama advan V105.
So could end up very similar to your setup.
How do you find the balance with 235 on 17" Rear 215 16" front? I was very happy with how the car handled at the limit on 225/45/16 AD08's all round, I'm concerned I'm going to pick up understeer going back to staggered widths.
Thanks
Dan

Dropping to 215/40R17 or 215/45R16 opens up quite a few more options, Bridgestone RE050A or RE040 and Pilot Sport 3! Thanks for that!
Flex, would be interested to hear more about how you find that stagger performs on track.
Cheers
