[Mk2] [Turbo] Stuck heat shield bolt

Post by markstevieandmads »

Ive decided to renew my exhaust manifold gasket so needing to remove the heat shield.
Im stuck with the 12mm heatshield bolt that is inbetween the turbo to manifold. It has rounded off. I cant get my irwin holt extractor on it. I csnt fit a smaller socket or spanner on it. It just wont undo.
I dont think i can get my grinder to it.

Any ideas?

I need to get that bolt out so i have better access to the exhaust manifold nut and stud as i cant get a 14mm socket on the exhaust manifold nut with it in the way.

Can you get a hammer and chisel on it with the chisel side ways to split the nut or chisel flat to sheer the bolt head if its a bolt.
Once the manifold is off then you can drill and retap

Alternatively hammer a socket on it and then undo, drop a size on a multipoint socket should go on fairly easily with some persuasion.

Leave it alone, there is no need to remove it. If you can't get on the 2 14mm nuts on the mani-head then just bend it a little until you can. It actually acts as a perfect guide for your socket and makes like easier imo.
