Not sure if this is the right section but...

my colleague at work asked me the other week if I liked mr2's (being an ex mx5 owner, and more recently a bmw 335i owner) and I said yes. said "do you want one for free?".............

the car: 1993 Black, JDM Import, tbar Mk2 rev 2, 144k kms on the clocks I believe. He mentioned its got some rev 3 bits on but unsure personally as im trying to learn about the cars now. he's also thrown in tbar glass covers, a greddy e-manage blue (not fitted), blitz turbo timer (not fitted) and

now the reason its free... its been in a field for 2 years and off the road for about 6 years (stored inside a unit for 4 ).... but I couldn't stand to see it rotting away in the field so I agree'd id take it off his hands.

so far on the problem list
1. headgasket - reason for car being put into storage (owner bought a rx7 fd and left mr2 alone)
2. sills need checking/welding
3. full service
4. brake rebuild/new disks
5. wheels/tyres (id like to get some stock wheels whilst I do work on it on the drive, as im really not a fan of the current alloys.
6. a bloody good clean

and anything else anyone can recommend.

luckily the tbar doesn't leak at all, and all the rubber in the engine bay hasn't quite had time to perish.. not to say it wont need anything.

but its going to be a long term project and im looking forward to getting it back on the road as im told its quite rare....and rare to get it for free...

Get them sills checked, i should imagine being in a field for that amount of time they'll be rusted. I would confirm the state of them first then think about whether it is actually salvageable or not.

I would recommend dropping the engine for the head gasket, it is possible to do it in situ but is much easier when removed. also you can clean and sort the engine bay out. You can also strip the clutch off and check the state of that while you're at it, plus replace as many rubber components as possible.

As you said a full service new disks and rebuild the calipers BigRedd are great for getting that done.

2 years in a field will rust it that quick?.... i really want to keep it on the road.. and can weld etc. so happy enough to repair it. sills i found on ebay £140 a side. so not too bad.

Well due to age of the car even ones that aren't kept in a field are generally at the stage now where they need the sills doing. If you take the plastic cover off on the inside of the car behind the seatbelt have a fish around you may find a piece of foam which will probably be covered in rust. Unsure why Toyota put it in there but it basically collects water and causes the sills to rust from the inside out.

I'm in northampton :)

Other than that it looks good, get it up in the air have a look underneath. I would 100% drop the engine and clean it up.

Does it run?

yes still run's. but HG is gone/going. so replacing it before I do any more work.

Ok noted, will try and remove engine to get a better look.

will look for the foam once its home. waiting for the current storage place to give me a date on when they can transport it to me so I can book the day off.

is ebay the place to go for replacement sills? or is there a seller on here.

thanks!
Ross.

I don't know of any seller on here, ebay should be fine.

I'm a bit jealous you got one for free. :thumleft: I'd love another 2 sadly my current motor is one of those that sucks money up.

are the max HP figures affected a lot by the rev? aka... is it going to hurt to get to 300hp on a rev2 engine/setup?

Basically it is difficult to achieve 300bhp on a standard Rev2, there were major changes to the Rev3 including a new turbo which manages 300. There are other factors involved. If you are chasing numbers you're better off switching to a rev3 engine
