Hi Guys
Im still trying to weigh up the options, but when you don't really understand
the differences, Its difficult to make a concise decision other then cost.
Im going to get Fensport to fit and map, but might buy through TCB as Paul
has quoted the lowest price so far. Basically my question is:
What is the specific reason that the storm is so much better ?
I understand it has Launch Control , Flat Shift & Anti Lag
features built in, with more plug points for add-ons.
But these are what ? I'm struggling to understand, If I went for the ATOM
does that mean I could only fit so many gauges etc ?
Launch Control and Flat shift would be cool, but I understand the turbo and
fuelling system has to be changed for Anti Lag and is not really needed on the
road ?
Help me out lol, cost is obviously still a factor and the ATOM would mean
it would get fitted and mapped faster !
Thanks
Jordan.

Hi chap, I found fensport v expensive. I just got the g4 installed for 957 Inc vat as the direct plug in. Has all the above.
Unless you're data logging the extra io is nit needed. Anti lag trashes turbos - very hard on them.

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] Link Storm or Atom
the atom doesn't do knock control (without the addition of the knockblock) for that reason alone, I'd forget it. the other I/O on the storm is a nice-to-have, but knock control is essential, without it you may as well have a power FC and save yourself the money

Hi Andy,
never understood if the G4 was any different to the atom or storm, however
who mapped your car ? , it would need to be done and they have a well known
Link installer who road maps the cars.
Who installed your G4 ? , guessing it was Peter @ SBITS ?

Hi Rob,
ok mate, well I'm not to knowledgeable on these types of things, when you say
"addition of knockblock" is this something that can be installed on top of the atom for a smaller cost then the Storm would make ?
thanks,
Jordan.

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] Link Storm or Atom
what are your long term goals for the car? That will really decide what the best ECU is for you.. no point buying an ECU, then having to add on a box to listen for knock, then get a wideband and controller, a boost controller etc when it may in fact make better financial sense to wait and buy an ECU that does it all as a newer, faster fully integrated solution

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] Link Storm or Atom
Hi Rob
The aim is a fast road with occasional track use motor.
Id like to expand the power to something around the 400bhp
mark as I've been told thats a perfect figure for the car.
But this of course will be over a time line. The main reason I'm buying an
ECU with Boost Control at the moment is because I believe I have all the
supporting mod's to make 300bhp ( fly ) with upping the boost
and a good map.

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] Link Storm or Atom
As Rob says, knock control is pretty much essential - no point in getting something that doesn't have it really.
Better to have a few features you don't need than find the cheaper ECU is lacking a year down the line.

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] Link Storm or Atom
tbh, the best thing to do is to pick the person you want/trust to map the car and take their advice (within reason, there's plenty of charlatans out there...)
there's countless different ECU's out there that will do the job, from an assemble it on your kitchen table megasquirt, to a motec that will cost more than a nice rev 3 turbo and everything inbetween
the features/capabilities of the G4+ storm would be adequate for what you need, it's got plenty of I/O and does closed loop knock control and boost control etc.. It's £1kish for the ecu, then you'll need the the wiring tails for it to be wired into your engine loom, a 3 bar map sensor, and ideally a wideband.
I'm not sure if it can use the stock knock sensor or if it needs a bosch donut style sensor too..
I've seen haltech plug and play adapters online too, so their range of ECU's may be worth considering, although, the Link may be the easier choice since it seems pretty much every man and his dog sells them and maps them these days

uses the stock knock sensor.
Even with the plug in module you can buy a harness that provides further I/O's in the future.
Give Simon a call at Predator Performance - I've been extremely impressed. (Dyno session this weekend to give the proof in the pudding).
It also allows boost to 25psi on the stock MAP sensor.

Is there a harness adapter you can get for the link G4?

Yes Mate, I agree. I've been by Fensport to speak to a guy named
Tom Hudson from "Hudson Speed Shop" He does all their Link mapping.
However he's yet to call me back.
Once I do ill get him to explain all and make an informed decision.

Cheers mate, its good to have multiple people to bounce off,
Not having any replies from Tom atm so will also give Simon a shout.
thanks,
Jodan.

How did the dyno session go?
Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] Link Storm or Atom
Sooo , Ive just managed to get a Link G4 storm for £600, albeit second hand.
Its being sold by a guy named Walton Smith from Nispro Performance ltd,
He's the head Honcho there, and also a lead Driftter on the BDC circuit who's
recently been appointed to one of the judge positions.
He's offered to fit and map the unit for 1k all in, I've accepted after doing
research on the guys mapping skills, couldn't find a single bad review at all.
Cars booked in on the 5th he will have for 4-5 days.

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] Link Storm or Atom
Yeah its the G4 Plug & Play that TCB are offering,
The one I have just acquired is the storm model.
Still however a very good price for the P&P !

Plus VAT..
I saw the one Walton was advertising on faceache.. the adapter harness could be neater but it'"" not be seen behind the boot carpet - it'll need repinning anyway as it's coming out of his rev2 so it's a fair opportunity to re wrap it.
Interested to see how you get on when it's mapped
