welcome to my basket case.

Post by qwakers »

so i bought a Very cheap N/a mr2 MK2 rev1. and a good job it was as near as dammit free too considering. the only problem was it was in wales. i live in Cornwall... .

ok ROADTRIP :)
Image

got there and it was as bad as i was expecting, terrible 'paint job' bodges everywhere etc, on top of that the seats are the wrong ones and held in by self tapping screws!
but the price was right and he assured me it was mechanically sound so on the trailer it went and off home i went.
Image
get it home, taxed and insured it and took it for a quick test drive (only drove it round the car park when i bought it)

oh dear, the clutch is slipping. now it had a new clutch in February so that's worrying...

took the clutch out, heavily worn new clutch in adjusted the pedal correctly, all is well. this was the first sign that some idiots had worked on this car before me, half the bell housing bolts where missing.....
Image

(sorted...)
Image

before driving it again i decided to stick a full polybush kit on it and new droplinks.

whilst doing this i had a prod round underneath and several more issues became evident.

handbrake cable was snapped (just needs adjustment my ar$e :) )

rear sills where full of newspaper and filler. dated the repair to a week before i bought it. gotta love liars...

brake caliper bolts where only finger tight.

oil was 2.5 liters overfilled!!!!!!!

the electrics where dangerous. i mean who twists the starter feed round a bolt and then wraps it round the +ve terminal and does the clamp up!

that and all the cosmetic issues meant this was getting expensive fast.

so the jobs completed so far
fitted a spare pair of bucket seats i had kicking about after making new mounts that are actually strong enough...
Image

new clutch

polybushed throughout

new drop links

serviced brakes

new handbrake cables

flushed cooling system and refilled with correct coolant mix

welded up the sills (yes it looks rough. my welder on its lowest setting is too powerful for this...)
Image
Image

sorted wiring or at least some of it.
(before)
Image

(after)
Image

and im sure there's loads left to do....

so errrm, hi, and ill keep this thread updated with the trial and tribulations of fixing a morons castoff....

Nah, the seats came first, that must have given you a hint of what was to come.

trying? i intend on succeeding :)

so today was the last day i intend on spending on welding for a while.

so i flatted the filler back, refilled flatted you know the drill then i chucked a couple of coats of paint on
til i ended up with this:

Image

passable and as there is going to be a paintjob in the near future im not bothered about perfection, and i have little patience for sanding lol

in this case its renault 614 blue from when i had to repair the front bumper of a neighbor's car when dad reversed into it....

i dont care about the colour this is simply a exercise in rust prevention...

next is to stick the wheels back on it and look into a missfire...

whilst i had the paint out i flatted back the really badly painted spoiler and gave it a dusting of Renault 614. just trying to decide what the end colour should be when i paint this car.
Image

personally i think its too purple. anyone got a better idea? preferably accompanied by the paint code lol.

also put split pins in the track rod ends and ball joints. whilst i had the wheels off i took all the matte black paint off the wheels...

Image

the lights and number plate...

I think that will do for today. i am supposed to be on holiday after all...
