MR2 turbo rev 1

Post by fellMR2 »

Up for sale my 1990 MR2 turbo rev 1 tbar.

This a 1999 import which I bought in 2013 with 140934 on the clock (not sure if miles or km or a mixture).

Pretty much all factory extras except cruise control: Half leather seats, ABS, PS, electric mirrors, electric windows, central locking etc

Although I have had it for nearly 3 year I was rarely driving it and it has actually been SORNed since 2014. Speedo now says 141267.

When I got it it came with a noisy gearbox, broken speedo sensor (previous owner said this just happened last time he drove it) and incredibly stiff coilovers (HSD monopro).

On 26/07/14 I took it to Luke at Pacific Works for a service and fitting of upgraded parts, and only a couple months after this I had it SORNed.

Pacific Works service
-Full flush and bleed of cooling
-Oil and filter change
-Full cambelt side overhauled
-Hose from hell changed
-Good condition ct20b rev 3 turbo - boost still set to standard 10 psi
-Urethane Motor Mount Inserts
-T.B.Developments. 3" Stainless Downpipe with the big flexi
-KO Racing R1 Exhaust single exit full 3" (comes with removable bung silencer). IMO this is the best exhaust for the MR2, certainly one of the lightest, which is pretty rare in the UK. Ordering from KO racing will set you back $560 + $138 shipping + ~$140 import taxes = $838 = £640
-Good condition Rev 3+ lsd gearbox and driveshafts
-Exedy Stage 2 Cerametallic Turbo Clutch. Good for 280 lb-ft / 370 Nm @ wheels
-Fidanza prolite flywheel
-Speedo sensor replaced (still rev 1 mechanical)
-From http://www.chicoraceworks.com/:
--spherical shifter cable bushings PTFE lined
--shift linkage roller bearing/ square bushing replacement
--solid roller clevis kit
-Redline Heavy Shockproof gearbox oil (80-100 pounds worth) which seems to be the best for gearbox longevity.

Further mechanical
-Blitz BOV
-Induction kit
-Compression tested with 160+-3 psi on all 4.
-Sniff tested with an ebay fluid kit that is meant to change color when exhaust gases are found in coolant. No change in color.
-Engine is spot on, starts right up, pulls great, no strange noises and, as far as I know, internally stock.

Interior
-Half leather seats in decent condition. Small marks on driver seat see pics
-Italvolanti steering wheel
-Shortshifter with drop plate and solid shifter mount bushes
-Sony bluetooth cd player
-Turbo timer

Exterior/Suspension/Brakes
-Styling wise it is completely stock with rev 3 wheels. Brand new zero miles front tires, useable rears.
-Paint is ok but not perfect.
-Minimal rust, not in critical places. Mostly on just a few brackets located underneath and in the engine bay. Also a bit under the doors but nothing serious.
-Original jdm yellow fog lights.
-Rear fog light on right hand side light
-Aerial works which I'm told this is rare.
-Tbars are leak free
-New handbrake cables as old ones were sticky
-New horn
Previous owner took the effort to refresh the suspension and brakes:
-New rear subframe
-Power flex bushes all round for £250
-4xball joints & 4xdrop links
-brake discs (grooved) & pads all round, 2x reconditioned rear calipers

Misc
-Tbar covers, jack and spare wheel present
-Only one set of keys present
-V5 on my name
-Alarm with remote arm/disarm/central locking
-Will come with fresh MOT which is booked for the 24th of August and should fly through as the previous MOT from a week ago only failed for worn windscreen wipers, faulty horn and rear fog light, which have all now been sorted. -Update now passed.

Extra bits
-HEL stainless brake and clutch lines - Included for free.
-Spare set of rev 3 wheels with tyres (Straight but could do with a refurb. Front tyres knackered, rears perfectly useable) See pic. Included for free.
-HSD monopro coilovers as above. Maybe knackered, maybe serviceable. Contacting HSD/driftworks directly it seems that they do not rebuild them. I bet somebody like gazshocks could rebuild them, heard also about igracing (shouldn't cost more than £180, new they cost £775). - For extra £100 or they will be advertised separately for £150
-st205 full chargecooler kit which came off a running mr2 installation with awesome painted core of jdm rising sun with a skull, pump (believe this is the standart st205), sock for rev 1 inlet, fiat cinquecento radiator, labelled wiring, hoses, swirl pot etc. For extra £150 or they will be advertised separately for £200. (actuall item: http://www.imoc.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?t=174993)

Bad bits
-As mentioned the HSD coilovers that I got it with were very stiff and uncomfortable. Now I don't now if this was due to them being installed or setup incorrectly, in need of a service, just how they are or a combination of the above. So I replaced them with standard used black billies I got cheap for a temporary fix. Was under the impression a couple years ago when fitted that one of the leak. Couldn't spot any leaks now though and the recent MOT said nothing bad about them. Do feel a bit soft to me though.
-There is some condensation in the rear boot when it rains. Easy fix from what I have heard with some sealant usually where the spoiler bolts are.
-Some folks might find this particular exhaust loud. For me it is not so bad with the bung installed
-Power steering used to only work sometimes. Does not seem to ever work anymore. Didn't investigate this further as on the rare occasions it was working it seemed a bit too light for my taste. No obvious leak, no warning light. Could be as simple as cleaning the connectors.
-One of the stock rubber brake lines had perished a long time ago and I only changed that one with a stainless from a HEL kit. Recently bled all 4 corners and they are working as they should. Ideally should do a full flush though (as car was standing for 2 years and also no idea when this was last done) and fit the other 3 stainless brake lines and clutch line at the same time. Perfectly driveable as is.
-Small oil leak that seems to be from the sump (see pics). No oil visible from the top and I doubt it is from the timing area as this was done only a few miles ago. From what I've heard this is an easy fix with some RTV sealant.
-Missing cover for the storage compartment behind passenger seat see pic
-There is a bit of water going in the rear lights. Left side not so bad, but right side a bit worse. See closeup pic. Should just need new rubber seals.
-A bit of rust under both doors, nothing serious but in the future might need attention. Anyway a used good condition pair of doors can be had for around £50.

£2400 OVNO for the car as is and the free extras, cash or bank transfer only, not interested in swaps. Only selling due to leaving the country for good. Will only be up for sale until the end of August, which is when I'm leaving. If it doesn't sell for the right price I will take it with me.

Random parts to go with the car for free. Starter motor, intercooler intake pipe, standard rev 1 shifter, speedo cable, ARB srop link, a white shield that I can't remember where from, various brackets and hard pipes that I believe are leftovers from the ct20b turbo swap:

Cheers man but the new owner will get dibs on it. If he does not want it for that price then it will be advertised on its own. Not sure I would let it go for 150 though..

On the other hand if the car doesn't sell for the right price by the end of this month I will keep it and the cc, and install it at some point.

I find it hard to believe that a reputable specialist would not give a written invoice (at least for such an amount of work). I only had this single experience with Luke and I was pretty happy with it.

I believe it hasn't been installed in a car since you had it ages ago. Hopefully the new owner (or me if I end up keeping the car) will put it to good use soon..
