[Mk2] [Generic] Sony headunit removal

Post by pbmr2 »

Hey all,

Got a new headunit and only just got round to fitting it. The old headunit is a 1996 sony xrc500 with all the original manuals and even the removal key. Thing is that the key doesn't do anything (after reading the manual and seeing where to stick it)

Had this kind of trouble on other cars with aftermarket headunits, basicly the idea is stick the removal key in and just pull the unit free. But in the real world that is almost impossible or really not possible at all with the unit in the car.

Tried using some slim knives to do the job of the key and then getting a hand up behind the unit from the passenger footwell to aid pushing it out. Nothing doing.

Any ideas people?
Would rather not have to take all the dash trim off just to replace the stereo, there has to be another way?

Removing the interior trim around the HU is the only way of getting it out. Unless you want to break something.

Even if you were to get the old one out with the key, how do you plan on putting the new HU in without doing the above?

Its not hard to remove the trim, do it right and do it once :)

Look in the Knowledge base on how to remove the trim

Right ok, I'll bite the bullet and remove the trim.

Was hoping that the HU would just slide out the cage and the new one would slide in.

Thanks for the info!

They're not fitted into a cage on these cars but bolted into a bracket. Trim removal is necessary and does ensure its fitted securely.

From memory you remove the gear surround which reveals some screws for the ashtray holder, remove , more behind the ashtray holder which secure the lower stereo/vent trim. There's a screw under the ciggy lighter holding the stereo, vent surround then pulls out. Something like that anyway.

got it all out ok and fitted the new unit. no chopped wires so just needed an iso cable.

plumbed in a DAB aerial and the microphone for the hands free of the head unit. was all fairly simple. found a guide on here for the trim removal, which was easy.

fitting upgraded speakers this weekend and checking the rust spot under the rear quaterlights. no external signs what so ever but best check while the trim panel is off. get that foam out of there too.

cheers for the pointers people, made it easier to dive in. the last 2 i worked on got uber stripped for weight saving so didn't pay much attention to the proper trim fitment or removal.
