[Mk2] [Turbo] Can you bench test a MR2 Speedo Unit?

Got a problem with my rev gauge not moving at all, I think the speedo works but can't remember 100% as it's not been driven much as a bought it as a project.

What I want to know is, is there a way to test the Rev gauge and/or speedo to check the motors haven't failed? Can I hook them up at some connection point on the circuit board or motors themselves > a battery?

I also noticed this converter





Is it right that whilst fitting this someone has cut a purple wire to join the yellow from the converter so the purple is no longer going to the actual plug?

I'd be very grateful if someone could shed some like on this
