My REV5 N/A MR2 - NOW GONE TURBO

Post by tsango »

Back in the 90's

I got my first MR2 back in 1995 when I got my first job. It was a 1991 UK NA T-BAR and cost me £11995

(slightly embarrassed at my style in the pic but it's the only pic I have of the car)

Image

A year later I had to sell the car to set up a business (not in fashion before you ask)

Going Turbo
Missing my MR2 I managed to find an imported Turbo Car for £6000. I didn't have a clue about them back then but it was a REV1 1991 car. Back in 1996 imports like these had a bit of a bad press and it was hard to insure because no one had an MR2 Turbo on their database.

Unfortunately the car ended up like this. Not my fault by the way, someone pulled out on my on a dual carriageway while I was doing 70 mph. Have to say that the car held up amazingly.

This was my next car for 3 years

15 Years Later - June 2012

I had wanted to get hold of another MR2 for a while. Wanted to get one in original condition before they all got modded or driven to death, so in 2012 I found this car for £1750. It was bit tatty here and there and gearbox crunched going down the box into 3rd gear, but it was a good base to improve on. Spent a few grand initially to get it into this condition. Had to cut and polish it to death....!

Initial work done included :

Service and Cambelt
Had to fix Driver Side Central Locking.
Clear Indicators
LED's in front Fog Lights (those nuts were a bu88er to get out!!!)
LED's in Number Plate Light
HID Headlight Conversion
New Roof and Door Seals
EBC Discs all Round
Replacement Aerial
18" ASUKA ST16 Wheels in Gunmetal and Tyres
Painted Brake Callipers
Done various bits of Body Work.
Replaced all the bolts holding the plastic guards underneath the car which were rusty and some snapped off.
Converted the heater LED's to red and red lights in the dash.
Clarion Double DIN Stereo and new rear and door speakers.

I have spent about £3k on the car since I bought it.

Stuff still planning to do:
Fit bass speakers behind both seats using the standard bass boxes.
Retro Fit Retracting Wing Mirrors.
Chrome the engine and braces
Turbo Conversion (November 2012)
Full Respray (next year sometime!)

November 2012 - Turbo Conversion[/b]

I managed to buy a REV 1 Non runner turbo car off EBay for £500. Oddly it was the same car, colour and year as the one I had owned myself, but was in a bit of a mess. I then trailered the non runner donor car and drove mine up to Peter @ Sbits. Pete was very good at sending my pics of work in progress. Not that I really knew what the hell half of them were showing me. I don't profess to be a mechanic.

The head was extremely grubby and the exhaust value seats were leaking

So that went of to the machine shop to have some work done on it and afterwards looked like this.

We were going for the REV 3 upgrades so I had bought quite a few parts off here for the conversion including:

REV 3 ECU/loom, Fuel Rail/Injectors, Pillar Gauge Pod for 3 gauges (60mm). SAGA Gauges (Boost, Oil Temp & Oil Pressure), REV 3 LSD Gearbox, Berk Intercooler, Alloy Rad and Double Fan on Alloy shroud.

Pete also sourced an exhaust fore me (blue flame I believe??). Didn't want anything too loud.

REV 5 Engine coming out my car and turbo engine fitted

Loads of parts were replaced in the rebuild including cambelt, water pump, various seals & hoses, alternator, main & big end bearings

There were a few delays towards the end of the build mainly due to the ECU i bought off here was found to be faulty and the guy I bought it off went very quiet on me so had to source another one. Then we found out that the cb26 turbo was leaking oil so we then so I went for a cb20.

July 2013 - I get my car back

So after 7 months without my car I finally went back up to Peters to get it back. I had also had the standard engine and Frunk braces chromed, so fitted them. At this point I didn't have the turbo engine lid but Pete stored that for me for the future.

Cheers mate.

The wheels are ASUKA ST16 in Gunmetal. Bought them from Wheel Mania. Those guys really helped me get the right set up.

I modified the ASUKA centre caps gluing in centre caps from a Toyota Auris!!

Was a bit concerned that 18" may be a bit big but they look great to be fair.

If I knew what I knew now I may consider going down to 17" because you can have a much wider rear wheel/tyre.

Not sure, it's a toss up really.

I've had 245s without problems before on Rota D1s.

Fractional offset differences, probably!

Great Wheels!

Very Similar to mine!

I am running 215 40 17's front and 255 40 17's rear.

No spacers and standard N/A suspension but the arches are rolled.

I would prefer the fronts to be a little less stretched
