rear vibration *pic added*

I have a vibration coming from the rear. Feels like passenger rear corner.

If i'm crusing along at any speed then accelerate it vibrates, feel it more at high speed and its very un-nerving.

My mate said it could be loose driveshaft nuts, damaged driveshaft, but the only thing i've done with the driveshafts is replaced the gearbox seal and the shaft went back in fine and that was about 4 months ago.

The problem has occurred in the last 3 weeks.

If the wheel was bent id feel it under braking that too with out of balance wheel balance.

Possible engine mounts?

I start a new job in 3 weeks time and this needs to be sorted.

Any ideas?

I'd defo check the driveshaft nuts first Alex

I had some come loose a while back

Driveshaft nuts should have a clip on to stop them slackening, but i suppose if the clip has corroded and gone on holiday then they could slacken.

I'll put it on axle stands at weekend and put it in first to see if I can see any movement while the shafts are going round.

I'll check the nuts first, but there are 6 nuts, even if one fell off its still got 5 holding it tight.

Nothing to stop 'em coming loose

They're just ordinary flange nuts

They may have been tab-washered originally though cos the garage replaced some gearbox parts when I bought the car

Would be a good idea if I could lock 'em, cos of the brute force that gets applied off the start line

Wheels nuts are tight so its not that.

They are actually not that ordinary - you try and find a source for flanged non serrated flange nuts - not easy. The material seems to be high grade also - if you try regular steel nuts or even K-nuts they will strip before they reach the torque spec.

When I said "ordinary" what I had in mind was that they're not any kind of locker

Checked everything;

All the nuts are tight
No play in my rear wheels, no movement up-down or side-2-side
Slight in and out play in the gearbox shafts but that's normal

No spring have snapped, would have not hoped not as they are only 4 years old, but no suspension issues. All drop links are okay, ball joints fine.

Had the wheels going round with engine on, on axle stands and no noticeable wheel movement, i.e. buckled.

Only noticeable issue, which could well be the blame is the gearbox mount bush, which is split through.

I'm buying another car at the weekend, so i'll have lots more time to look into problems. Will be using it for another week anyway, but will try and wedge some rubber in between the gaps between the bracket and the bush to see if it makes any difference or not.

You can repair it by removing the bush complete with bracket, seal one side of it, and pour in some RTV Silicone ( e.g. this stuff http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RTV-NEW-Silic ... 35bd04e08e )

I can confirm that they add little if anything to the vibration transmitted from the engine - even on my car with thin bucket seats bolted directly to the car floor you can hardly feel any engine vibration

Needs to be a good blowtorch to get the metal sleeve out that's a press fit into the mount. Or a hacksaw.
