Updateage- Sorted! (with pics) Curing 5th gear pop-out

Post by Lauren »

Right,

I've got an early MK1 and guess what? It didn't take long before 5th gear decided it had had enough and now is forever popping out under acceleration or lifting off. I can hold it in with no problem, but have you ever tried going down the M6 at 80mph holding the gearstick with one hand, smoking a fag with the other and steering with your knee?

Well it is of course possible and though i've got the hang of that new driving technique i'd much rather 5th gear stayed in of its own accord.

From what Mark and I worked out (we stripped my old shagged SC box) the wear must be in the fork and/or the hub. So we have ordered these two items from our local MrT. Fork was £20 and hub is £50. Obviously we don't know if this will cure it but i'm rather hoping so as we are expecting that the fork has worn which is allowing the hub to move around which will cause it to jump out of gear.

Tomorrow i'm going to use the force of the 'Jedi Beard' and have a go at it. Really hope it works because this could potentially save a lot of people quite a lot hassle. Because 5th gear is on the end of the input/output shaft you can take the casing off with the gearbox still in situ.

Obviously am going to take lots of photos and write up etc.

Fingers crossed! Am actually looking quite forward to it as did an oil change today and my bearding need went very much unsatisfied.. oil changes are just too easy these days.. ;)

Lauren, I've been reading on the US mr2oc site, and there was some suggestion there that the problem may be caused in certain situations by the shifter mechanism itself (ie the bit on top of the tunnel)... can't remember much else other than folks were trying different cables, adjusting the lever etc..

Don't know how much mileage there is in it though.

Well looking at the gearstick end is relatively easy, but what is of interest is that as we know the later boxes on MK1s were beefed up to help prevent the pop out problem. When i ordered the hub it is a superceded part (ie revised) so i'm guessing this is the difference between early and late gearboxes. We noticed this difference when we re-checked on the EPC at our friendly MrT.

i drove the feral with 5th gear pop out for about 2 1/2 years (common c50 and c52 trait from what i've heard).
in the cites and towns 4th was all i needed, and when i was on the hi-ways when i needed 5th i had an ocky strap (stretch doobie with a hook on the ends) this was my 5th gear pop out retainer. :P
i had one end up under the center console and the other i would slip onto the gear stick once i put it on 5th and away i would cruise... :)
worked great and i used it like that unitl i bought my sc 1/2 cut with the beefy e51.

Good stuff Lauren :) ! More pioneering work for the Mk1 "Jedi Beard" library. (It's double good news because I assume because you are working on your car that the Super Edition is now back on the road as well :D )

Updateage news!!!

Have put the new selector fork and hub on 5th gear and it worked! Was a POP to do tbh.. getting the casing bolts off was pretty straightforward then it was just a matter of one 10mm bolt that holds the selector fork on, then slide that off with hub attached. Slide new one on, bolt up and err thats it.

The wear was on the dog teeth on the hub and 5th gear dog teeth. Obviously i didn't change 5th gear, but the new hub is ensuring it stays in gear fine. Total cost was £75inc. £50 for the hub and £20 for the fork.

There is still some nodding when you lift off of about 10mm which is the wear on 5th gear dog teeth.

Will post up pics etc, have already done a page on my webshite but NTHell haven't updated it yet.

Okay guys have added an article to the Knowledge Base:

http://www.imoc.co.uk/forums/kb.php?mode=article&k=74

This is a really good resource, if you have some 'How To's and stuff you have done that would be useful to other owners, from changing the oil to engine conversions etc.. please let us know and we'll help you add an article to the knowledge base.

Have you got any oil in it? ;)

Seriously a whiney gearbox is likely to simply be wear on the gear teeth themselves. This isn't signalling imminent doom or anything (my old SC box used to do it) its just some wear on the teeth thats all, generally nothing to worry about.
