Does anyone know where you can pickup "Butyl Adhesive tape". My Mk1 failed on a hole just under the rear quarterlight. I managed to remove the window after scraping my face with a screwdriver and throwing a window into my nose. But once I've done the job I'll have no method of sticking it back!
MrT prices are 24+vat for a roll, which seems to me a bit (!) steep for just a roll of sticky rubber so who's got ideas?

If I were in your shoes Ian, I would probably use seam sealer instead. Not the right stuff I know, but for the layman, it would be easier and cheaper. I have one of mine sealed up that way. hth.
Re: One to start the ball rolling! Butyl Adhesive Tape
Just did exactly the same for one of my rear quarters... it broke when we removed it to patch a couple of rusticles along the bottom edge of the window
We used some black seam sealer, the same stuff, in fact, we used to fix the bodykit. That window isn't going anywhere!

Similar but not silicone. I can't remember what it's made of but you can get it from an autofactors easy enough.

Cool, I'm off there on Saturday to get a tensioner pulley for the service. I'll pick some up!
Thanks guys

Its monster stuff mind Ian, once you have stuck something together with it it's pretty solid. You will find a thousand and one uses for it around the car. Got a feeling it might be polyurethane.

Hi Spud gun, Excellent I'm sure I'll find plenty of uses for it!
BTW my names not Ian its Leigh, but no probs
As for an odd place Pete, I'm glad there seems to be other cars in a way getting this problem and its not just mine!
It seems like either at the factory or when the window was removed previously, the area wasnt prepped for putting the window in. as water has got into the edges and bubbling out!
I had the worst night so far on the car (read: this close to having a fit!) The welding was an absolute nightmare! I thought I would weld with the patch underneath the original metalwork (ie as a lap weld) but I kept on droping the patch down the inside of the wing only to fish it out with an extendable magnet about 20 times! Eventually I gave in and welded over the top. To make matters worse it wasnt my best welding either ! Still after a lot of grinding and filler I dont think it will be obvious....hopefully.

Re: One to start the ball rolling! Butyl Adhesive Tape
Leigh, why don't you use a welding magnet clamp?
Re: One to start the ball rolling! Butyl Adhesive Tape
I was using a welding magnet but perhaps not as strong a one as I would of hoped! Is a welding clamp different? if so, I may need to pick me up one of those as I guarentee theres more welding I havent seen yet
Still nevermind, Its welded now, solid as a rock ready for its MOT retest and some highly enjoyable track day driving!
Now to sort out those front brakes

Leigh, Machinemart is your best place, they do various magnetic welding clamps.
And you're into trackdays, that's cool!
I absolutely love Ty Croes Angelsey track, have you driven it?

You kiddin? I've not done it yet, and I really want to go to Anglesey. My Manager drives a raw striker with a 4A-GE lump in it aswell so we are itching to get out there! However, as soon as I join Mk1Club I'd like to see what action there is in Wales, as it seems (until recently) to have been quite quiet for meets/trackdays!
I'll pop down (notice, "local" in wales = less than 100miles round trip, swansea and back = 80 miles!) to machine mart, could do with a new mask anyways

Leigh, please check on machinemart website before you go!!!!!
And I've just read up on your car. How did you "buy" that for nothing? It really looks rather nice to me! You lucky so and so!
And as for Angelsey, it's absolutely brilliant. I've done it 5 times I think.

Well the guy had it up for in the for sale section of MR2DC for £1 for a restoration project. It's been a long haul but its slowly getting there. Long drive up to macclesfield and back Car looked awful, hadnt been touched in about 6 years, but everything was original, including the rust . So far it has had the following done to it:
It even has the original invoice for the purchase of the car and various paperwork and owners manual/sleeves etc
Its taken a long time to get it X far (about 5 months I think)
If you want to read more, check out http://mr2.cardiganwebhosting.co.uk
I havent updated it recently but I do add pictures quite frequently.
- Koni Front adjustables and Jamex uprated springs (included with car),
New Electric aerial from maplins with the help of your good site!
New lower rear arch panels both sides (JDM)
New lower sill return panel 1 x side (JDM), 1 fabricated sill return panel (Me)
New Patch job under quarterlight
Resprayed Engine covers courtesy of help from IMOC members back to original colouring
Reconditioned teardrop alloys including gunmetal grey tears

Sorry about that Leigh, dunno what made me think your name was Ian.
Re: One to start the ball rolling! Butyl Adhesive Tape
hehe, yeah dont worry! Easy mistake!
Re: One to start the ball rolling! Butyl Adhesive Tape
leigh.
3M do a prodcut comes in a tube that you put one of those guns into and it squeezes out. IIRc it's called window sealant and it's silicone free. i'd call a local motor factor or a bodyshop that might give you a free squirt of the stuff. I've got some in my garage but only a tiny bit left.
sorry your car didnt pass but at least you know what you've got left to do to sort it all out.
