Ok...what the xxxx is wrong with my car?

Post by nightSpirit »

Drove it to work the other morning, temp guage all over the place..never past half way though. Got to work (all seemed fine) opened engine lid, high pressure steam release and hiss down near s-bend/turbo entry point...all coolant pi$$ed out on floor. I then spent all day trying to get the car towed to a garage (ended up joining the AA and just about getting it on a flatback)...what a joke...bloody 2 inch ground clearance for you.

SO now the car is sat in a garage being looked at...Guy repressurised the system today and refilled it, it then ran for a whole hour without problem...he stopped it and what do you know it started to p1$$ out the coolant again. So he's slowly removing pipes trying to find the offending article. And And And my car is due at Rogue/Thor saturday to be 'tweaked a bit'. My car knows I'm telling you, should have bought the cosworth.

Anyone any ideas?

How old is your coolant filler/pressure cap? Sounds to me like it may be weak and is letting too much coolant back out/air in when you stop and the engine is hot?

Also does it look like the overflow bottle is low/being emptied too? I guess you probably already know that that should be filled up too, otherwise air just gets in the system. This may all be obvious/already covered by yourself, but thought I would mention it anyway?

Any visible leaks/spills at all? Also might be worth giving it a good bleed if you haven't already - but then you do say you have had it pressure tested...

..hmm.....

if its coming from the turbo area its either

hose from hell?
water pipe to turbo
water pipe the radiator
or water pipes to the heater matrix.

Pray its not the hose from hell :)

From what I understand, its a small piece of pipework that sits right under the exhaust manifold, and has a tendancy to go on high mileage cars, and is a b*tch of a job to do?

....

Did a bit of search and found this link....

www.mrtwo.net/mr2modproject/service/hfh/hfh.htm

...which explains everything!

Hope it isn't that!

Well, mechanic has stripped some of the pipework down and found two pipes that let water out when pressed. So replacements are enroute from toyota, hopefully on the car monday...then off to Mr. Tuner. Thanks for comments, I did think it was a hose problem so it's a relief it seems to be that.

It might be the hose from hell, but I don't care as I aint swapping it ;)

i had exactly the same problem. think the hose had just rubbed away on a sharp edge. Everytime i stopped the pressure in the system went and splash there went the coolant. A real pain :(

sounds about right that...atleast it's nothing major I hope (never know with cars though do you).

Dunno on price Stevo, your mate Rich was a star sorted me out with numbers and things ;) I'm getting a new battery aswell because mine is fooked with only driving the car about once a decade so I expect a hundred quid or so for the trouble. Spoke to Matt at Rogue and might be taking the car down monday night instead just ditch snowboarding and go down. So who knows, might still be on time.
