[Mk2] [NA] Differences between REV3 and REV4 NA engines??

Post by jem »

Does anyone know the differences between the REV3 and REV4 NA engines. My car is a UK REV3 but I have a low mileage Japanese spec REV4 engine and gearbox. I plan on stripping the newer engine, replacing all the seals etc and repainting the block etc to make it all look nice. I'm going to used all the electronics, wiring loom, ECU, injectors, distributor etc from my REV3, so that side of things will all be REV3, but are there any mechanical differences such as cams, valves, conrods etc?

almost sure they are mechanically the same, the rev4's have more emmission controls hence the 4/5 hp down on power.

i have just removed a rev3 and a rev4 engine and they look identical

Yeah I thought they looked identical.

I guess the emission control and lower power is in the ECU map rather than anything mechanical.

i have the REV4 ECU, but I plan on running the REV3 one.

I thought the inlet, TVIS was different? Not even 50% sure though.
Power did drop from 173 to 168bhp though as it was 'lean burn' :?

I can't see any differences between the REV3 and 4 regarding the ACIS, I'm going to be putting the whole inlet manifold/ACIS from my REV3 onto the REV4 anyway.

Revision 3 and 4 JDM, and revision 3 UK engines are the same. Revision 4 and 5 UK engines have exhaust gas recirculation and so lose ~4bhp, and also have transponder coded ECUs and slightly different wiring looms. JDM revision 5 engines are BEAMS VVTi engines, and very different!

So basically a UK REV3 and a JDM REV 4 are exactly the same. The only difference I can think of then would be the speed limiter on the JDM ECU.

The UK rev 3 ECU is pin compatible - we swap them into G-Limited based race cars to remove the speed limiter - so you can leave your UK ECU in there if you wanted to.

I'm going to use my rev 3 ECU, engine loom, injectors, distributor, intake, exhaust ect anyway :thumleft:

I got Rev 1 NA car and want to put into it rev 3 (maybe rev4 ??) engine from Celica 6 donor = the engine came with E56 LSD gearbox - I also want to make it working on my MR2.
I havent got ECU with it, but wiring loom on engine got 4 plugs.
I got all rev2 ecu's and can buy 96-97 4 plug ecu which came from Celica 6 (not sure if the same engine revision).

Will late rev 2 ECU work good with this engine ? Pinouts are the same, but just spreaded trough extra connector - I can rewire it, but will that run any better on 96-97 ECU than on late rev 2 ECU ?

If the ECU 96-97 have the immobilizer in it is there any way to use it on my car ?

Rev2 ECU won't work with a Rev3+ engine.

Are You sure about it ?
If so do You know a reason it wouldn't run ?
Is that because of different coilpack ?

I got 2 different rev 2 ECU's with different numbers on them which was running with different coil packs. Both got 3 connectors.
Some dude is selling 'rev3' ecu with 3 connectors which is the same as I had on late rev 2 and he says it was running on rev3 engine.
I think I can run it if I rewire it.

Rev 2 and Rev 3 engines are totally different

Rev 2 is closer to Rev 1 than 3
