[Mk2] [NA] Starting problem I had.....

Post by mike1984uk »

Little bit of info before I explain what happened...
UK 1994 M reg rev3 2.0i manual fitted with a toad ai606

Im new to this mr2 ownership, only had the car around a month and all was good for the first week then the car wouldn't start. Disarmed the alarm fine, no cranking what so ever, as if the alarm was preventing the cranking, so attempted to bump start it and it worked so seemed odd if it was going to be the alarm interfering with it. Took the battery off for a charge incase it was low and was causing problems. After a night with the battery off the car and charged up the car was fine.

Now..... lol this happened again 2 nights ago and this time I was armed with my multimeter to check things over, battery had its 12v, bump started it again to check the alternator and that was fine. So thought there has to be more to this. Looked into it the day after.....

Checked that i had my cranking signal off the ignition switch - ok
I did check that i had power on the cranking wire where the alarm was wired into the loom and that was fine
Checked at the starter power supply and earth ok, although no power when cranking on the signal wire for starter, as i was there at the starter bridged the connection to see if the starter was working fine - ok

Headed then for the starter relay, finally found it in the boot lol, all found to be fine until i checked the earth wire for the relay - open circuit!!Bridged the earth wire on the connector to one of the bolts in boot, cranked and it fired!! Hoooray! lol

I should have traced the earth back to its body connection but i'll be honest, didnt fancy going through all the fuss of tracing it. So.. just spliced into the earth wire and connected it up to the bolt I used to check. Working great now.

Wanted to post this incase someone else has the same problem, or get it in the future, did try to search it on the forum but couldnt get anywhere with the search function lol.

Hope this is a help to someone one day!
