[Mk2] [Generic] Custom 324mm Big Brake Kit fitted

Post by cantfindausername »

Yesterday I spent the day fitting my Custom Big Brake kit that I've designed and have been sorting out for people on various Group Buys over the last 2 months or so.

My initial assumptions for needing to trim the dust shield and rear caliper mount point were spot on.

I've fitted Mintex pads along with the 324mm discs and Goodridge lines.

The rears are made too measure and currently run about 5mm away from the wheel, so really on the limit.

All in all I'm really please with how the kit came out and fitted. And very impressed with the improved brakes and looks.

Here are a few pics from the day...

Hi,
I'm probably going to get slaughtered for this, but here goes.

I see that you have increased the disk size, but by keeping the original caliper and pad size footprint, have you really increased the stopping power?

The PAD surface area looks like it will remain the same?

My mechanical knowledge is limited, so do forgive my ignorance.
I just cant work out how this works, seeing as the brake caliper size has not been increased aswell ?

The braking force will have been increased by moving the caliper further away from the axle. It's effectively increasing the leverage. That's why pushbikes still stop relatively well even with old-style cable brakes rather than discs - because the wheel rim is essentially an absolutely enormous disc! The bigger the diameter, the less clamping pressure and pad area you need to achieve the same braking force.

Oh that looks familiar ;)

What size wheels are you running Ant? My rear caliper is close, but not as close as yours lol on 17"s?

Also, how did it go with the brake lines? Were the Goodridge ones ok?

Ryan, they are a big improvement over what I was running, but in all honesty, the system could probaly have done with a good bleed before. I never really had the confidence in the previous set up though, seemed to take forever to slow the car.

Keith, the Goodridge lines are the way to go. The fitting on the strut is adjustable in that it can slide up and down the line. :thumleft:

Also, I'm running 17's, but they have a big inner lip I guess is the only way to describe it. I was actually quite concerned that the kit I'd designed wouldn't fit, but it really is made to measure 8)

I think they look the nuts =P~

Geoff, thanks for posting that.

Nice but I would have covered the car before doing the grinding!!

Give it a day or 2 and your car will be covered in little rust dots where the hot metal sparks have landed on your paintwork!!!

Not the end of the world, just means you will have to clay bar the car to get rid of it.

Dont think any would have got onto the paint from under the wheel arch. Paint is shot anyway. :thumleft:

I had a feeling that that was the case, from the photos. Excellent news :) Where did you get yours from as from what I've seen (albeit through a very brief search) no-one directly mentions the fact that they're Goodridge hoses?

Well the photo I popped up is of the front, but oddly the rear (as you saw from the emailed photos) does run much closer to the rim, but not as close as yours

As mine is just a weekend car it will probs take me a few weeks to bed them in fully. They've done some high speed braking already though and cope very well with everything I've sent their way.

I got my goodridge lines from sBits a long time ago... only just got to fit them though

Bah they're out of stock :( So I've ordered them direct from Goodridge, hopefully ( ) they'll be here before the weekend so I can fit them and have the brakes finally completed :D

Edited for awful spelling lol.

going by the last few topics I've read concerning sBits I'd be inclined to source them elsewhere anyway. :-k could have saved yourself a fair amount of trouble by them being out of stock.

Shame nobody on here works for a brake pad design company ??!! I could see these kits being an instant steal if the pads were modified to add friction to the wasted area of the disc..

I was thinking that last night JJ. Wondering if there is anything out there with more height to the pad.
