V8 Mk1 6 speed with power steering

Post by PW@Woodsport »

Not often i post but when i do it's usually something pretty wild.... how does this grab you? Inline audi v8 4.2 producing 340bhp and a six speed box,all in a mk1....

It can't be done is not a phrase i understand!

The engine is now fully hung on its own subframe as is the gearbox. This is the first Mk1 in the world to have an inline audi V8 with 6 speed fitted.Still lots to do but i thought id share what many said was impossible.

These will one day be a formality to install

hmm now as much as i love modifying a tweaking cars that seems well not to fit! is there going to enough room left to get some seats in?
i supose you'll end up with about a 50/50 weight distribution if nothing else!
are you going to have to space frame the rear end slightly to get some strength back in as surely theres alot of flex with no bulkhead and centre tunnel!
oh and wheres the fuel tank now going?

But it does fit, so does a drivers seat and it also needs the fuel tank shortening, not a problem for me.

Yep perfect 50/50 weight distribution and enough power to relocate a small house. The rear end will be braced as will the cabin.

If its doable in a mk1 then a mk2 is a relative formality,in fact we have already taken a booking for a mk2 version :thumleft: Not cheap mind you.... but then looking at the pics its not hard to understand why.

LOL im 6ft exactly and i fit with a bucket seat , it really doesn't intrude as much as the pic suggests, a bit of an optical illusion that one.

Wow that looks amazing. going to be a lot of swearing involved when it comes to spark plug change by the looks of it. can you get to it from the cabin for belt change etc or have you welded a bulkhead in?

There will be a removable access panel from the cabin side for easier engine access, so plug changes and even cambelt changes should be pretty easy. Also the way i have designed the engine and gearbox mounts means i could drop this engine out in under an hour if need be.

 Wow Just Wow!

im guessing with the engine intruding that much into the cabin and it being a slight squeeze for me currently This will then be a nono for me at 6ft5 :(

Its a normal mk1b chassis, with wide arches, it uses the stock rear suspension triangles with no need to extend or widen anything.

Sorry tiny i reckon anyone above 6ft would have difficulty fitting in, you could do this to a mk2 though and still fit i reckon.

I can only imagine the beautiful V8 sound this thing would make being only inches away from your ears!

You're a legend mate.
