TEAM IMOC - Ten of the Best 8 (TOTB VIII) - July 26th, 2009

Post by michael »

http://www.totb.co.uk

Following on from the success of the last few years I'm at it again - "Team MR2" opened a lot of eyes in 2008 but as the majority of the team was made up of IMOC members I've decided to run things as an IMOC team this time around. Attempts to unify the various forums and types of MR2 didn't work out as I'd hoped and the only person who wasn't an IMOC member looks likely to enter in the drag class anyway.

This also means that we can make it more of a club event with the potential for a decent social gathering as well as the event itself.

Image

The event takes place on Sunday the 26th of July 2009 at Elvington Airfield near York and I'm expecting to be able to secure 10 places again after making a good impact on things. We'll be hoping to attack the 1/4 mile and top speed event as usual but also want to look into the possibility of cars that will be able to show their ability on the handling circuit too.

Ideally I want everyone to have a go at all 3 events but if we can get some specialists in each we'll have more chance of getting points. After an MR2 won the RWD side of things last year it would be nice to repeat this and have a few cars fighting it out in the finals :)

Image

The search is on for the 1/4 mile monsters, the nimble corner lovers (and talented drivers) and good all round cars that can show the flexibility of the MR2.

Image

An event like this can do wonders for the appeal of a particular make of model, earning the respect of the masses can also boost used values ;)

The team is open to anyone who is willing to work as part of a team, all models of MR2 are welcome (as long as they are competitive of course!) and I'll do my utmost to ensure things are organised as well as can be to ensure you have a fun day with as little stress as possible.

Image

In addition to team members I'm also keen to try and get as much help for the team as possible - pit lane support crew to help out with any spanner work, people to guard tools, "hospitality" to keep the team and visiting club members refreshed, people willing to collect and document times as the day goes on and more... if you think you can help with something please let me know :) We always need help to set things up at the start and more importantly to take it all apart again at the end, everyone tends to rush off and leave a handful of people to clean up.

Image

I'm also very keen to hear from any potential sponsors who may want to contribute towards team entry costs in exchange for advertising space, supply useful parts for the day, feed the team, provide shelter and so on...

Make yourself known if you want a day out in front of 1000's of people!

For those of you who want to spectate I'm also trying to arrange for some club parking inside the event, this will work on the basis that people who buy advance tickets get the option of this first. Places will be very limited though, the MLR will be taking up most of the room. A bit more info below.

Image

Further info...

For Spectators - Everyone is aware of the credit crunch so they will be pegging ticket prices back to last years levels again, so its £15 in advance from the www.totb.co.uk web shop or £20 on the day. Kids under 16 are free entry with parents/guardians.

For car club members
Group buy discount as usual on 10 or more ticket orders, along with a dedicated area for show cars from each club within the trade display areas. Competing clubs will also be given room for a club marquee if required alongside the show cars. These areas will be allocated on a first come basis so if it's something you want and can help with please get in touch.

For competitors- entry prices remain as last year at £100 for private entries and £175 for tuners/pro cars.

Handling circuit - last years system of multi car individual timed laps worked well and will be repeated again. Competitors will be allowed 5 timed runs although the track may be declared free for further timed runs later in the day if all competitor runs have been completed, subject to agreement on the day.

Top Speed - 1km standing speed trap as in 2008.
Classes/tyres- last years class structure and tyre rules worked well, with little or no complaint from competitors. Suggestions on other allowed tyres should be made before 1st March, similarly for any suggestions on rules/regs. Other than that we aim to maintain the class and rule structure from last season which worked well.

Test days - Straightliners Ltd will be able to offer midweek qualifying days at Santa Pod if clubs are interested in 1/4m drag qualifiers, subject to their own terms/conditions and enough interest.

As soon as any additional info is made available I'll pass it on but if I've missed anything or you have questions in the meantime please feel free to sent me a message or post up here.

So... who wants a go?

Is there a limit to numbers?

Whats the criteria for being selected/requesting a place?

I did have a quick look but couldn't find the old TOTB thread.

Everything seems to be staying as it was last year so far, rules, prices etc... more info when I have it but if interested parties could start making themselves known that would be great :thumleft:

For anyone thinking of taking part and wondering what sort of times / speeds they need to aim for... these are the results from last year. As you can see we lacked any real circuit times or top speed runs, something to work on this time.

An overall win would be nice but I think we need to concentrate on taking over the RWD side of things for now :)

Best 1/4 mile times

B24 Nathan Freke Toyota MR2 10.84 129
B26 Xxxx Mirza Toyota MR2 11.24 130
B23 Michael Greensides Toyota MR2 11.37 120
B25 Roy Ashby Toyota MR2 11.39 120
B27 Simon Lockyer Toyota MR2 11.91 116
B19 Larry Vallot Toyota MR2 13.91 107
D6 Chris Huntley Toyota MR2 11.63 124

Handling

B24 Nathan Freke 55.109 60.46 142.3 56.07 55.10

B19 Larry Vallot 69.812 78.46 81.34 69.81

Top Speed

B24 Nathan Freke Toyota MR2 169.9

Did anyone else do a top speed run?

We also came 7th in the club points, the first time we've ever scored any club points too :) (It was 3 points due to Nathan's top speed run)

Lots of interest so far, we have the potential for a very strong team if things work out :)

Entry forms are now available for anyone organised enough to fill one in now:

http://www.totb.co.uk/compete/apply-now.asp

If anyone is struggling with the link I can email a copy to you.

Closing date for all entries is 3rd July 2009

I'd like to do the same as last year, all forms to come to me and then I'll send them all on in one go - easier to keep track of things that way and I think it worked quite well last time.

And also some sad news from Chris Mann @ TOTB for anyone who knew Simon Hinshelwood:

I've some sad news to bring as well for those of you who knew Simon Hinshelwood, my colleague from day 1 of TOTB. Simon passed away on Saturday 28th Feb aged just 40 years, after a long illness. If anyone wants to send a card/flowers or attend the funeral etc please drop me a line so i can pass on details. He'll be missed, one of life's nice characters and a smashing bloke. Simon used to film/edit and produce all our inhouse dvds and was instrumental in setting up TOTB with me.

If anyone wants the email address for Chris please let me know.

Blimey 40 is no age is it?
Didn't know the guy, but no doubt would recognise the face.

So, guess what, the TC engine is IN the car so that's a start.

Same 2 car plan as last year Chris?

Will the red monster be able to get in with the road cars or are you just going to enter straight into drag class?

I would really like to get involved in this... been over spectating the last 3 years but would love to compete this year...

Dont know how easy it is going to be for me to get to the mainland before July and lay down some times at the pod or shakespear... hopefully someone will organise another straightliners event in Ireland before then.. !!

anyone any suggestions ??

I have a v- box recorder and plenty of access to the motorway !!!

D'oh. Working that day, but will see if i can get it off as last year was great- and the best tan i got all year.
If I ever get my car back from 3s, and it runs well, then i might even fancy a part. Should be ok on the 1/4 if all goes to plan. :thumleft:
