The old ones you would beat, but the new ones have about 300+ BHP
as standard ... it depends on the mods ofcause ;)

Cossies originally had 204bhp. Think the later ones ie the 4WD Saphires were around 220bhp, but no more than that.

pretty sure there were some bigger versions.
i read somewhere they used to hit 60 in the late 5s, very early 6s, im sure these boats would need more than 220bhp to get to those figures.

Nope not with Sierras.

Even the original RS500 had only 224bhp.

Escort Cossies maybe, but not with the sierra. Mind you i'd expect that most cossies have been modded, bit like tubbys really.

There are some very serious saph's knocking around, especially in the midlands and stoke (turbosystems).

My mate has one running ~550bhp, 2wd too, so it destroys pretty much everything.

Never underestimate cossies, the technology may be old but it still takes some beating!

Doubt you will find a standard cosworth these days, they're usually all modded to bu88ery and beyond, so I wouldn't be too gutted about the result.

jim,

thats the difference in turbos ... he's got old skool T3/T4 turbo and they are relatively big in stock trim and quite a bit more air than the ct-26, like everyones posted already, very few stock cossies kicking about.

No need to be disheartened, just save up for a better turbo like a Greddy TD06 Kit and you'll show him a clean set of pipes without too much bother.

You can't always beat everything on the road !! Every modified turboed car is special in their own way.

Stock for stock, the MR2 could take a cossie from the lights quite easily.

Look at in the respect, your still on your first engine, he's probably on his 4th by now !

lol, tar!
least it wernt a spotty youngster driving it. then i woulda been disheartened! :-)
altho 15psi is nice, it would certainly be alot better to take this 15psi to the redline instead of changing up at 5-5500rpm when the boost tales off! [-(

I used to have a 2wd Saph Cossie and have always been into Fords.

Lauren spto on with the power figures, the latest Escort Cossies only had 220bhp as well.

Thing is with a Cossie, they are Soooooooooooooo easy to get to 280bhp, it's just a chip and 15psi. 300bhp+ isn't too much bother either with some bigger (green) injectors, 3 bar map sensor, exhaust, air filter and you're there. It also costs peanuts compared to tuning anything jap. So most cars are now running this kind of spec.

They are great fun, but a bit dated now and probably the least reliable of any 'performance' car!

As above, bolt on a big turbo and that'll see them off!!

Oh..... and as for the sound..... any Cossie with a stainless system on it sounds like that, noisy as you like at full chat!

As I replied on the MR2 bb.............

The good thing with the cossie is that it's old skool tuning at its best.

Not a chance in hell though that my modded tubby would keep with my stage 3 saff cossie!

... plus, also, despite what people say, they're classics. A cosworth at full chat sounds really good, whether its a turbo or a n/a conversion :-)

Funny, I find myself supporting the cossie at dragways now... at one time, the jap car used to be on its own, now plagued with scumbarus and other jap crap, I see a cossie doing it and just barely holding its own down the strip... go on old british crap technology.

Fast, but not for long !!

The whole Ford scene is still a tad behind the times, but they are starting to use jap technology and it's getting more popular. When I had my Rs turbo I fitted a Blitz dual SBC and was something like the 4th RS turbo in the Uk to fit one :? .

Seemed wierd to me as an electronic boost controller makes so much sense on a turbo'd car. But Ford's are starting to use this technology so they can keep up with the all the jap stuff.

I would say it's actually the other way round mate!

You think - most jap cars are fitted with boost controllers , and then possibly a separate fuel controller as well.

Most big bhp cossies are running completely live mapped, so that everything is controlled by the ECU.

Having said that, I know of a few very big bhp cossie using E-boost and the like, but most these days are going aftermarket ECUs.

In a lot of cases, it's unnecessary - my T34 saff holds 2 bar, and there's not a boost controller in sight!

Nope - completely standard engine, but mapped well, and it doesn't quite hold that boost to the limiter

Whooping Fords

Post by Cliff »

I have a lot of respect for the old school cossies and the old school fords in general i.e MK1 Escort, but I'll still have a go at giving one a whooping!!
