ive found a wire off from somewhere around that area but i cant find where it goes too.
its a female spade connector white/ grey sort of colour.
looks like its probably come off when the cambelt was changed, ive looked all over the place, anyone know? its a 3S-FE engine.

earth the connector you have found to the body or engine and see if the temp gauge shoots up to max,if so thats your temp sender wire and its location should be within the wires length.

The sender is on the other side of the head, this has been replaced and is all ok.
The problem im sure is to do with this wire thats been left off since the prev owner had the belt changed, but i cant find where it connects to.

On all toyotas there's odd terminals in the engine bay that never connect to anything,these are for models with extras,air con,PS etc...so finding an extra terminal is common (the mk1 has about 5 spare in its bay).
As far as fixing your temp gauge,locate the temp sender,it will be a single wire sensor and earth the wire out with ignition on ,if the gauge shoots to max the sensor is faulty,if it doesnt you have a break in the wire between engine bay and clocks,or a fault with the clocks themselves.
