Repair or sell?

Post by J-T »

ok, to anyone who didnt read my previous thread, my MR2's engine is now dead (died the very day i took pics of it to sell!). This has left me in a bit of an awkward situation, in that it literally 2 weeks ago went through its MOT, in preparation for me to sell it (and needed a new rear caliper). Overall it owes me about £1000 ( i had bought it in november to keep for a few months and hopefully make a bit of money on - obvs not going to happen now!). So what would you do in my situation - replace the engine, then sell on, or cut your losses and sell it as it is? If i replace the engine, ill need to pay to get it done, as i have neither the time, skills or space to do it, so im guessing at around £250 to buy then engine, then what to fit it - £500?

This is the car, about 20 mins before it died!:

my mate stacked his mk1b a couple of days ago, he is selling his engine and gearbox as well. he's not looking for much for it either, i think £150 maybe? its a great engine too, nothing wrong with it, and its in leeds, not too far from you. he has videos of it running this morning before he started stripping the car apart, so you can see/hear how it sounds etc.

as for fitting it, someone here has recently swapped an engine who has never done anything like that before. depending on who else there is where you live, a fellow member in the area would possibly do it for a decent price or at least help out...

check out his post for details... http://www.imoc.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?t=100797

P.S I'd definately keep that one from the pictures, it looks to be in great shape, aka no rust in the usual places, which is a rare thing!

An engine complete with box in Ellesmere Port went on fleabay recently for £100. So they are
out there cheap enough. Should be able to get it fitted for less than £300, it's only a days work.

Shame to sell it as it is as you'll get rag all for it :(

What's gone pop anyway ? Is it fixable ?

Deffo repair that bad boy. I love the look of the mk1as with the black and red colour contrast and small front splitter. Never seen one in the flesh actually so yours must be pretty rare.

Russ is right. I'll sell you mine for £150. Best be quick though as I'm breaking it and no engine bits gone yet, although it's only a matter of time.

A bit of extra ballast won't hurt, might help the back end maintain traction in the wet.

you reckon? i wouldn't trust anyone doing it for £300,we obviously charge more than that but its done 100% correctly and ive done hundreds,i think £300 is back street money.

You get what you pay for i guess.

No it isn't. It's had a complete new sill panel. sure, there's filler there, but only to shape it - it certainly isn't 'full of filler!' Same as the rear arches/valnces have been done, but they've been done properly.

As for fitting it myself, i really don't have the skills to do it, or the desire to do it, lol. I'm just gonna have to get a few quotes and see how it goes. But £500 seems more than likely after speaking to the garage i usually use.

The courtesy switch should still be there as thats part of the quarter panel, not the sill.... clearly its been filled over because it was rotten, otherwise it would have been retained, the switch bung is not part of the new sill... so if its had a genuine toyota sill replacement the courtesy switch area will have been rotten and its been filled over,so yes that area IS full of filler as i originally said :thumleft:

but they've been done properly.

Nope...Its one of the things we all look for when buying a mk1 because its easier to fill over that area to tidy it up than repair it properly.

From the pictures it does look like the courtesy light switch has been removed but to say it is full of filler (unless you did it) without actually seeing the car is a touch arrogant in my opinion. The switch could have been plated over.

The bit that says it has been done properly is talking about the rear arches/ valances, which look quite well done from the pictures, there will of course be filler there (unless he used full rear quarters) but to say it is full of filler is impossible from the pictures. :(

jesus.... the point im making is that the switch is missing and that usually means its got filler there instead of steel.

Ive no idea wether its been plated over or not,but the fact remains if i went to see a mk1 for sale and that area was blended over id be wary, sorry if that seems arrogant but its an important structural part of the car and a hell of a lot of them just get bodged in these areas.

truth is Paul you can't say for deffinate that its been bodged with filler!

logically though if the metalwork in that area is sound why would anyone remove the courtesy light switch and plate it over?

just poor use of words to state what is obvious
