Waterproofing Speakers etc in doors

Post by Scruff »

Hi all
What is the recommended way to waterproof speakers, and crossovers
mounted in the doors !!

I've heard it is mega important to keep it all water tight coz doors can be quite wet places and I've just forked out £100 so I want to do it proper like!

cheers all

I put my crossovers in sandwich bags and cover it with electrical tape so it's waterproof, the speaker i haven't found a decent way yet without causing some sort of distortion? Out of interest what did you buy?

I bought Phoenix Gold ZR6.5 Component speakers
(got them for £90 inc delivery which I thought was particularly good)

I only found out last night that they might not fit in my 2 (boo)
They are fine width ways at 16.5cm, but the depth is 7.2cm!!!?!

I'm attempting fitting them at the weekend so I just pray they fit !!

If they don't fit, any idea's please would be appreciated !!

Sandwich bags are an ace idea...where abouts did you mount the crossovers?

Easy to get round this one, just make some speaker spacers out of MDF that go between the speaker and the door, so they dont go as deep into the inside of the door and your glass will clear it easily!

I've seen a lot of threads saying about Spacers but wasn't sure how to go about it ! like what depth of MDF do I need (I suppose it depends on depth of speakers)

Do you have to cut a hole in the door panel !

I will have to look for myself at weekend before I post any more seriously idiotic comments !

Anyone done a how to for the mdf spacers, positions and depths ???

I have searched and came up with 1 pic that confused me rather than helped!

I mounted the crossovers by the wire entry into the door by the hinge (just zip tied it up).

I had the same problem with the speakers as I have Rockford components
I ordered some MDF speaker rings from auto acoustics and trimmed some of the plastic out of the door card and it fits nice and snug

To protect the speakers build water runways out of duct tape. Basically a sheath that will run down the back of the speaker and direct water flow past it. Difficult to explain and I dont have a photo to hand.

What you could do is log on to www.mf2k.co.uk and ask on their forum as these are the guys who built my install and have experience of MR2s.

I was sort of thinking that would be the way ish!!

still in the middle of installing AMP (haven't got to speakers yet)

talking about installing stuff..anyone know why Halfords battery terminals tend to chuck out enormous amounts of whitish washing powder type stuff that also causes corrosion! (I covered with grease first in an attempt to stop it) and also where to buy decent ones ????
