Speedo not working - any ideas?

Post by J-1 »

Looking for some help if possible...

My speedo / rev counter isn’t working anymore. The car has had a new (secondhand) gearbox and TRD LSD installed during the engine rebuild last year, so guessing it could possibly be the speed sensor in the gearbox but my understanding is these don’t often fail?

I managed to source a secondhand speedo unit, but it still doesn’t work.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

I have seen a couple fail with the plastic head coming loose and falling inside the box, maybe worthwhile nipping it out for a visual check.

Put some electrical connection h=grease carefully onto the loom pins where it meets the gearbox sender (presuming it is an electronic speedo type)

I say carefully because you don't want the grease to bridge the terminals.

Sorted mine out perfectly.

Speedo Sensor = cheap Although you said you changed it

Purple wire broke or one of other 2 wires = cheap

nylon wheel in gearbox slipping/broke (like mine) = expensive.

there is a chance the LSD was installed without the plastic gear to drive the sensor gear. Or it has slipped/become lose some how.

Not sure if it's possible to see much in the hole, never really looked too hard.

The motors in the dials do go sometimes too. Though with the gearbox having had work I'd start looking at that end first.

You can check the ring gear by looking through the hole where the sensor mounts. Be advised, that toyota does not stock any of their nylon ring gears any more.
