very bad news actually, it is not as bright as expected.

The engine overheated and I lost power after just above 100 miles covered.
When I test drove it I didn't have any issue, same to drive it from Gatwick to Oxford. But as I was going for a check up (I do that with cars I buy) at Drift Limit Performance, it lost power and there was some smoke, and would not start again. So had to call the AA to get me to Drift Performance. But they could not keep the car, so they just turned me away. Kindly the AA guy got me to another garage he knows specialised in performance cars, although he was not supposed to. So the car is there but I am waiting for them to check the car and tell me what is to be done. But they said it could be head gasket at least, sounds bad. But I wonder what triggered that, after 100 miles covered and not before. A leak maybe, although I had checked, but again I'm not expert.
Anyway I am discussing with the guy who sold it to me. He says he was unaware of this issue. In a sense I can believe because the car has been driven less than 20 miles in a year, because he has 2 other cars.. unless this is the reason why it hasn't been driven.
Well, trying to solve it in an amicable way first. But I think responsibility is on him for this, or am I wrong?

I will keep you updated

Is a shame

The car was booked in for a 1/2hr health check, and we couldn’t keep the car as we’re at capacity, and I couldn’t have it jump the queue either. We didn’t know of the problems until it turned with the AA.

Please keep us updated though we’re happy to help.

I tried to call several times without any success and left a voice message as well. Obviously I don't expect to be given a priority, but it's a shame that it couldn't stay there.
Anyway hopefully it will be sorted soon, it's not the best possible start with this car, but I don't lose my motivation.

Just money could be an issue. I don't know if the previous seller has to participate in the costs. According to the customer advisers, although it's a private seller I have the right to ask him to cover the repairs, or even gave the car back and get my money back.
Ideally I'd keep the car and get the repair done though, and hope I don't have to go through a legal battle with him, we'll see

Why didnt dl still give it a look over anyway?

I doubt you would get anything from the seller. Private sales are sold as seen. You could have ragged the hell out the car and blew it up (not saying you did) and why should the seller then pay for that?!?!
Id be getting advise elsewhere as never heard of something like that with a private sale otherwise there would be no point in aa checks etc when buying a car.

I have read a few stories of people trying to get some or all of their money back on private sales when things go wrong, you have to prove the the seller intentionally misrepresented the condition of the car when making the sale. Something that I thought was going to be argued with that 'bigperm' car we saw pop up here a while ago - saying a car has no rust yet its riddled with the stuff if pretty easy to prove.

Like ^ says, who's to say what the condition the engine was in when you left vs a question of how you drove it when you got it. There's not much proof of either.

Thats the big gamble when buying a car that hasn't seen much use in recent years/months - anything could decide to give up the ghost when its given a decent stretch out on the road. No matter how long it has been 'dry stored for xx years, only run on shell unobtainium, never thrashed etc etc'

They had a quick look but to have the final word I had to get the car back home, and tow it again to them whenever they can take it, which was not possible for me, so the AA guy kindly took it to another garage.

Yeah I heard the same kind of things. As I said I will see with the seller.
He fixed a coolant leak himself last year so having driven the car very little, it's possible that this fix was not as solid. Anyway, not the best start but hopefully this little car will be back on the road soon with all its power :)

I would be wondering about the location/extent of that leak and how bad it was...

he told me he replaced a lower hose, and it had passed the MOT despite the leak last year so I guess it was not a big leak, and having fixed it, it had no advisory about it at the last MOT last week

Leaking water isnt an mot failure anyway so it could of been peeing out and still pass the mot

oh okay, I thought it was as it was an advisory on the last year MOT

well, to give some news, it's not good at all, have to replace the engine as too many things have been damaged in there (the turbo is fine though). They said they found some poor job on it, but can't tell whether it was the cause of the failure.
Anyway, I will have to ask them to do it as my mechanical skills are far from good enough to go for it myself.
But they can't supply a second hand engine. Do you guys know where I can find one (twin entry turbo) that is reliable? I contacted driftlimit but they had only an n/a engine and suggested tcbtoyotaparts, so I contacted them and waiting now for a reply but if you guys have other recommendation, I'd be happy to read them

Really not the expected start but hopefully soon the beautiful red will be back on the road

Very rare for the whole engine needing to be replaced because of a blown head gasket?!?!

Id get a second opinion... maybe someone who knows what their doing?

Secondly, why not get the current engine rebuilt then at least you know the history rather than buying a secondhand engine which is over 20yrs old now.

If you want to take the chance(which in my opinion is just throwing money away again) then also try hatton motorsport and ask for stephen as he has had a few mr2s in lately.

Should of just bought mine while i was selling it lol

haha I know right, just had not sold the RX8 in that time.

Well the head gasket was the guess when I brought it in, but they had not checked it yet. And it was apparently more serious.
I'd be happy to have a second opinion but DriftLimit won't take it as they have too many jobs on their list. Other specialists are a bit far to get the car to.
So unless someone here can have a look on it, I don't know where I could find a reliable place to get it double checked

As for the rebuild, yes I considered, but the history is not complete either on this one, and I had just got it so I don't think it's really a good criterion.

But if u rebuild the current engine then it doesnt matter bout the history.

The only way it could be damaged by overheating is a crack in the block.

The diagnosis seems very vague to me. Might be worth trying a few other people to look at it... might be worth the transfer fee...

Take a look at the following who have good feedback

Predator performance in southampton
Patrick chambers in heyhill essex
Jpf toyota which is john french birmingham way
Mrtwo is birmingham way too
Hatton energy motorsport in cornwall
Woodsports - paul woods in durham

Closest for you that i know of is Jon at Castle Eaton Services in Swindon though ive had problems contacting him via email lately.

These are all mr2 specialists

Hello guys, some news after a very long time. So it happened that there was a very poor job on the heater matrix pipework, which probably caused the failure.
My car is still at John French's garage, he has been very helpful all through, and I am getting his own engine, used but well looked after, with new turbo, gearbox and exhaust. So I should go with peace of mind now. (thanks markstevieandmads for the suggestion)
Also I am dealing with the seller who's been silent since it happened, as I had asked him about the coolant leak and he said it had been repaired, but it's clearly a wrong advertising, and according to John and citizen advise, although it's a private sale, if he said something that was not true, then I can claim something.
I'll let you know on that side

Anyway I'll get the car back at the end of this week if everything goes as planned :)
I'll take some picture to celebrate that, and finally I'll be able to enjoy this one ;)

So your swapping secondhand parts for secondhand parts? Is john warrantying this for you then as this seems a bit odd to me to be swapping parts of an unknown for an unknown?
For proper peace of mind i would have gone for a full refresh of an engine then you have a clean slate to start from.

yes I'm taking second hand because my bloc is really at the limit to be able to be rebuilt, so it would not necessarily last long.
John is giving me a warranty for everything, and we discussed a lot of different options, but I chose this one.
