Popped my mates and took my spare engine cam cover

Starting with this:

took the crap off with a drill with a wire wheel on it:
Image

Placed masking tape over the lettering, and then used a scalpel to trim around them:

Primer laid down (2nd coat):

Then onto the product id be using on the cover:
Image

Heatgun on the go after a thick coating of the paint:

The finish, which im more than happy with. Just leaving it to dry fully before i remove the lettering tape, and possibly polish the letters again with a sanding block:

its a finish i hadnt really seen before. My friend who introduced me to it has loads of MX5's and supposedly its quite popular on them.

Im more than happy with the finish especially as it was done in a relative rush (was losing light). thank god for heatguns.

only downside is the price per can, and the fact you have to be careful not applying it too thick.

other than that would recommend it :thumleft:

looks like ill do the intake plenum etc when the engines been dropped.

small but big update for me:

Got the drivers sill all welded and temporary paint on it (stone chip soon)
Really happy with how its turned out, especially as it was my first attempt at welding.

So here she is, sat on the ground...well that is until i turn it around on the drive and get started on the passenger side

Image

Second thing was ive always had a load of crap wiring under the dash, didnt investigate due to concentrating on the sill... however id had enough of looking at it and decided to investigate.

Turns out its an old alarm/immobiliser kit which has been left installed (but not fully wired in). I presume an old owner had issues and decided to bypass it.

I also a turbo timer which to be honest, i let the car cool down naturally on the way back from a drive out so dont see me needing one.. well until i upgrade the turbo and take her on track.

I then temporarily fitted the radio i was given by my mate, just waiting on my cubby hole to arrive from a forum member:
Image

Heres the left over wiring/bits
Image

and heres the interior looking abit better, needs a good clean but ill do that last.
Image

may/may not be updates for a few weeks as im in early stages of buying a house so moneys diverting to there.

cheers dude, getting there :thumleft:

Looking forward to getting all the body work sorted then machine polishing it/getting some decent wax on it. poor things had 5 years of neglect sat in that field.

i honestly cant wait to turn the key for the first time. I've not even heard an MR2 in person before. let alone drive one.

passenger side.

looks like a good start :S

So after removing the outer passeger sill its similar to the drivers side, tad worse at the back.

looks like this side has had a bad mot patch too without any cleaning/protecting the metal. it looks like someones just welded to rust, fitted a new outer and fillered/painted over it. no wonder its bubbled through again.

Got the inner panel kurusted and repaired/welded. Not the prettiest but strong and the rusted metals gone.

Cut out the old rusted metal
Image

Made CAD templates (cardboard aided design)
Image

Finally welded in and painted to give it some additional protection
Image

Now just the rear quarter to get cut out and repaired.

Small update, unfortunately no pictures as i got my head down.

the rear has been fully welded, and now its just time to drill all the holes for the spot welds in the new outer sill and get it welded in. weather/light depending ill hopefully have this side complete by the weekend.

then the fun starts. I made a rough list of whats left to do:

  • fit outer sill/paint
    buy/install new alloy radiator
    drop fuel tank/upgrade fuel pump
buy cancer bars and fit them.
    remove current engine
transfer parts onto new engine, paint block, fit new cam cover.
fit HKS intercooler (heat reflective tape on IC pipework
buy and fit timing belt kit + water pump kit
    buy and fit decat dp
    buy and fit new battery
    buy and fit new disks
    buy and fit new tyres
buy and fit new handbrake cables
buy and fit new spark plugs/air filter/oil/coolant
fit new brake lines (have braided to go on)
fit new suspension bushes (have bushes to go on)
    mot car
spray on stonechip on sills with compressor at a friends.
    enjoy.

think thats it.... ](*,) ](*,)
