I'm in two minds about doing this, I've been told that 1zz/2zz conversion will give me a bigger spark and more power. My goal is just over 400bhp fly.
However i see George's MR2 is still running OEM and is at 700+ and other big power 2s.
I guess I'm looking for the pros and cons, help me out
I've bought a 1zz loom, just to find the 4 coil packs now. What else do i need?
Ditching HT leads and dizzy for COP always a good idea?

Assume you have an aftermarket ECU? You'll need some way of taking a cam timing trigger if you want to remove the distributor completely, have a look at this Racer X kit as an example - http://racerxfabrication.com/mr2-celica ... il-on-plug
Re: Ditching HT leads and dizzy for COP always a good idea?
Very nice Gaz, i may look into this for the future. I have a Link G4
But just want to see who's done the conversion

Re: Ditching HT leads and dizzy for COP always a good idea?
I have done the conversion and the kit is basic had to re machine a few parts so they would work better but overall it was great and smiple

In for the replies as im also interested in this.
Re: Ditching HT leads and dizzy for COP always a good idea?
Yep. I have cops and 8 grade iridiums. Spark millions stronger and helped hugely after 350-400hp.

Aaron from ATS Racing stated in their website that our stock electric system is pretty strong and capable:

A good COP system should be an advantage as it has a more recent design... But more pricey as well.

COP can have tuning advantages with an aftermarket ecu.
You don't chase horsepower by upgrading ignition. All you need is a reliable spark. It's money that can be better spent elsewhere in the car.

This! Things like a bigger or stronger spark are marketing gibberish. It makes no difference how hot or cold, large or small the spark is; if it's there at the right time it will ignite the mixture.
It is maybe important to note that COP do burn out and when they do they are expensive!

Well that's just not true. Selecting the wrong temperature spark plug will result in the plug overheating or excessive carbon buildup in a short period of time. . Overheating can be particularly dangerous as it can cause pre-ignition.
Re: Ditching HT leads and dizzy for COP always a good idea?
Gazza, don't mix up the temperature of the plug, which is a function of its design with regards to heat dissapation via the contact between plug and cylinder head and the quality of the spark itself.
Simlpy put...even if the spark is totaly weak and only just managed to be produced by the coil, if it is sustained within the combustion chamber at the right time it will ignite the mixture - it doesn't matter if it ist 35kV or 35MV

Re: Ditching HT leads and dizzy for COP always a good idea?
It's the cop from the 1zzfe that you need. I seem to recall that the 2zzfe uses a different setup.
If you want to keep a clean oem look, then you can fit a 5sfe oil pump which has the space for the trigger wheel sensor.
Also the trigger wheel pulley is 13521-88560.

Although it's a little bit long, I would recommend that you read this thread to get a better understanding of what's involved.

Re: Ditching HT leads and dizzy for COP always a good idea?
The gen4 pump also has the sensor and the lower crank gear has teeth.
Stock setup on the gen4 also uses a cam sensor but it isn't really needed in a standalone setup.
Just options for using stock toyota parts for the trigger wheel and sensor.

Very interesting this guys, thanks. Going to take time and read once I'm home

My mapper mentioned this to me last time I was there. Something about being able to time the spark better iirc.
Re: Ditching HT leads and dizzy for COP always a good idea?
Yep the spark either ignites at the right time or it doesn't.

I am no expert but this is exactly why people do it on the mx5 community I am mainly involved in.
Re: Ditching HT leads and dizzy for COP always a good idea?
Spark blowout is a factor too.
