4AGE distributor less ignition

Post by kazi »

Hi all. I have a 1985 AE86 Trueno Sprinter and after some help from y'all. in the middle of a complete overhaul and have got myself a RAW 4AGE. Im running distributor less ignition due to the cams its is running etc etc.

Im wondering if anyone has done this to there own 4AGE and what coil packs are best to use. Ill be using an OMEX 6/710 most likely and from what i have read, using a wasted spark set up is the best option on these. I will be using a trigger wheel (36-1 IIRC) and crank sensor. I've been told to use either OEM AE92 4AGZE single coil, a 2.0L vauxhall coil or one from a 90's ford as they all mostly run waster spark on single coil? this is all new to me so if I'm talking crap please tell me.

many thanks for any and all help

I have a Smallport GZE run by an Omex 600 using OEM twin DLI coils (Each coil fires two cylinders). I inherited it rather than choosing this set up myself but it seems to do the job. I believe the coils are the same as those used on the 7M-GTE (Although being a 6 cylinder that uses 3 of them) which is useful as a source of spares and due to the trigger wheel/crank sensor setup there's no need to use the cam sensor that replaces the dizzy on the factory setup (I just have a blanking plate over the dizzy hole)

If you only want to run the ignition side and not any fueling ie if you want to run carbs theneither a NODIZ unit with ford coilpacks would work

or you could try Triggerwheels who do a bundled kit for the 4age

Thanks for the replies. It's quite a hevaly modified 4age running 298deg cams, underbucket shim conversion and in jenvey throttle bodies so would really need to do everything including fueling. I'll have a look at the trigger website. Have been having a look for the GZE could but they are pretty hard got.

The trigger-wheels set up is everything needed which is great. But what like is the ECU? I have heard of it but was many years ago. Can this ECU run TPS for itbs?

The megajolt only runs the ignition side using Ford or similar coil packs. NODIZ I think does have the capacity to run fueling and ignition again through a Ford coil pack, they also do all the sensors needed as well.

If you are using an OMEX ecu then this should run both and all you would need is the coil pack and possibly the sensors. It may be a good idea to contact Motorsport Electronics directly, I hear that they are very helpful

Currently I use 2 of the 7MGTE coil packs using a wasted spark setup from my AEM. I believe that the individual 7M coils are the same as the 4AGZE DLI just there are 3 of them in total and the bracket to house them is different as a result. I also used two ignitor packs from single coil st182 Celicas.

To neaten up my engine bay I've since acquired coil on plug packs from the latest gen Celica which have the ignitor built into each one which I will be installing soon hopefully. :)

Let me know if you need a home for the 7M coils once you've got the COPs up and running, I've only got 1 spare at the moment and wouldn't mind another 1 or 2.

Sorry about the slow response, not been on for a while. Another vote for the ford Idis coil pack here. I've been running one alongside an Omex 600 on a full n/a build for a good few years now. No problems at all.

You can also use the Escort / Sierra / YB cosworth crank sensor.
