so i started prepping the bodywork for paint yesterday now ive got most of the mechanical defects sorted... there is only so long i can bare to look at a car that badly painted.

i stripped the black paint off the bonnett wings and doors with £4.99 paint stripper from screwfix. more than effective... and much cheaper than the 100s of sanding discs i would have gone through otherwise.

then i machine sanded the nose cone... or i tried to. my trusty old faithful DA sander decided to die halfway through. annoyingly screwfix have a makita 125mm DA for £44.... but it was out of stock. big surprise there. the only other alternative being a TiTan one. to be fair, it does the job...

after a day and a bit the car now looks like this...

got pi$$ed off with it after a while and went inside for a beer and a movie.

more tomorrow.

today i pulled the doors off and finished the 1st sanding stage (all large areas that i can get to with the da) ive been sanding for days now, this is by far the biggest project ive ever taken on. ive done single panels, all the lower running strips and bumpers of a kia sorento and even whole motorcycles, but never a whole car. i go so tired of it i decided to change direction slightly. ive got to wait a few days anyway for the paint to arrive, so i decided to look ant the various wiring issues. so far i pulled the lower dash off and replaced about 50 scotchlocs with solder and heatshrink. then the radio. this has had the original wiring butchered so much i cant even FIND the original permanent live and ignition live feeds. all the speaker wires have been cut off and although i have the wiring diagram, nothing meters out quite right. i decided to do what the previous owner did, disconnect the original system and wire it all up separately. only i intend on doing a much better job. i picked up a switched live form the cigarette lighter so thats power sorted. all ive got to do is pull all the oem hardware out and run a speaker wire to both doors and both rear speakers. but that can wait. what a mess......

Bear there are two different audio systems that were fitted to an MR2 - the standard one (found in most UK cars), and the premium system which is more common on imports. The premium system has amps for every speaker and small "subwoofers" behind the seats in the storage bins. The wiring for each system is very different.

As the premium system is amped, it needs a specific type of adapter harness and if you want to use the speaker outs instead of preouts, you need to wire in line level converters as well. Unfortunately a lot of people simply couldn't be bothered to do it properly and just chopped it all up.

If you're finding that nothing is matching up, chances are you have the wrong diagram :thumleft:

spent the evening after work sanding the last edges and masking up. tip: floor protection film, its self adhesive but not too much and sticks well to bodywork and masking tape. and its cheaper than brown paper....

painted the back of a few panels, i always paint the back of panels first. so when i turn them over and mark them (theres always one) it doesnt matter so much....

Good idea, your progress is at lightning pace i just don't know where you find the time. I normally find that working and family stuff gets in the way.

Ah I see, I wish I had that kinda time :thumleft: Certainly very cool to watch your progress.

It can take me a week or so to finish one thing such as the crossbrace I am currently polishing for hours and hours and hours. [-(

oooooh great.... :( :( :(

nothings ever simple. the rings just went in my compressor.

for most things this isnt a real issue. the odd spot of oil going down a air line doesnt matter....

unless your spraying. i have a water trap and its catching most of it but not all.

and compressors are VERY expensive when you go to the spec i need....
