[Mk2] [Turbo] faulty ecu

Post by bigal »

After I thought I had cured my engine cutting out problems by replacing the AFM I have had the same problem revisit me today. i.e. I start the car, it ticks over, and then suddenly stops, then it either will or will not start depending on how it feels and whether the cel is lit or not.

Anyway I decided to have a look at the ECU and have discovered these two issues as in the photos below. Please could someone tell me if this is repairable and does anyone on this forum have the skills to do the repair.....I wait in hope..........I'm hoping to get the car mot'd and back on the road after 6years but its fighting me.

I can't see the pictures clearly on my phone but if it's just blown capacitors there usually quite simple to replace.

If you can wait a few days I may be able to loan you a rev 2 ecu to rule out the problem

Yep...usual rev 2 ecu blown capacitors.
I had same.problem and a guy called Chris d sorted mine out.

Replacing the capacitors is easy, its sorting the corroded tracks that the goo has caused can be the problem.

Looks for my thread on mroc under notroubleclubber

Yep it looks like some of the tracks may be afected bythe corrosion. I've taken the ecu to a repair shop as I didn't want to have a go myself as it looks like you'd only be able to have a go at repairing this thing once. I hope they don't bxxxs it up. I'll post pics when I get it back.

Well I got my ECU back today, and my xbox but thats a different story. All seems well, car started, ticked over, revved up fine, didn't cut out and no flickering cel. There's a good post over on mr2oc about this problem, apparently a bad batch of capacitors or the result of not using the car much or laying it up.
Anyway it would appear that the best route is a repair because if you buy a replacement ecu you're not going to be certain the same problem is not present in the replacement.
Hope this might help others.

Hi thanks guys the post you put on is the exactly the problem
that i have with my mr2 . The car wouldn't start for love nor money
then i replaced the battery and it burst into life .
and then cut out and wouldn't start again
then after a hour it started again so i jumped in and drove it for a few mile
and it was fine. The next day it started no problem. So now i think its running
fine all happy with myself
i drove to shops fine drove back fine
next day car started then cut out and wouldn't start
so disconnect the battery then reconnect it and it started ticking over fine went to drive it cut out
so after reading your post sounds just like my problem cheers

Before assuming you have what is, in the grand scheme of things, an unusual problem, start with the basics.

Any error codes?
