5SGTE builder - recommendations? And questions!

Post by J-1 »

I've decided to go down the 5SGTE route.

I seen there was a post / suggestion for a new section for 5SGTE, and a sticky for a how to, but until this happens I'm on the quest for as much information as possible.

I know there's a few 5's on here so any help is appreciated.

What I know so far;

All I need is the block, crank and main caps.

Either turn the journals down to suit 3SGTE rods, or buy custom 5SGTE rods.

The crank needs machined to fit a 3S flywheel to mate gearbox.

The block needs machining to fit oil squirters.

The pistons will need some machine work as well - how much work?

Some people machine the deck to create additional water ways.

Is there anything else that needs done, bought or that I should take into consideration?

Also, I'm interested in Machine shops that have done this work (successfully!) before. Any recommendations?

Can I re-use my oil squirters from my 3SGTE, or is it better to buy brand new ones?

Since my car is a full time track car now, I'll be looking to make the addition of a baffled sump. Can the Morosso one fit without re-work, or is modification required?

Big thanks to Ashley for the info he PM'd me.

Do believe peter giddens at Sbits had built a few now. May be worth a call.

Morosso sump :thumleft:

Drilling the block for the waterways- not required imo.

Also remove the balance bar drive gear from the crank.

Defo worth talking to Peter at S-bits for some tips, if you get him to build it be realistic with time frames and when he can schedule you in (quality takes time and he's a busy guy!). Also worth talking to Bob... Gavinda knows his eggs as well :thumleft:

(and feel free to drop me pm's with specific questions when ever you like mate, if I dont know the answers I can probably find out for you)

Thanks for the replies fellas :thumleft:

Can anyone confirm the journal size (OD) of the 5SFE crank?

What other parts will be required, like oil pump etc?

Can we get a list created?

Thanks in advance to collective knowledge of IMOC 8)

Simon is building it, without a doubt.

Anyone else that I've asked didn't seem interested. Simon seems like a sound bloke (spent 45 mins on the phone to him last week discussing things). I'll give him my money 8)

I would definitely say Luke from Pacific Work, only guy I go to for MR2 work, been his customers since '08.

His time is precious though but, I like his attention to detail, second only to mine 8)

His engine bays look awesome!

Willing to travel anywhere for this as I want a proper job done.

I doubt you'd find much difference in build quality from any of the well known specialists recommended on here the main factors i would imagine will be the timeframe you hsve for wanting the engine done and fitted and how that fits in with their current commitments unless your willing to wait until your garage of choice is available or have them do the work around other projects.

Another factor is parts availability some build parts are becoming difficult to source now so unless your builder has the bits on their shelf you may still find yourself waiting whilst they attempt to find the parts

I'm in no rush. I've still got a lot to buy for the car, and there's still a lot of work I have to do before it goes down to Simon.

I estimate my car will be going down to him late next year to be built with all parts supplied.
