Pulled the trigger on a rev 3 Turbo....

Post by ruth11 »

Well, today has been a good day :)

Leicester Tigers won, Leicester City won and I went on a road trip with my hubby and brought home a new toy!

First car we viewed, which may turn out to be a bad thing, but to be honest, I think we did ok... Now it's time to make a list of what needs doing!

It's a 1995 Turbo T Bar in what I think may be Steel Mist Grey, with lighter silver spoiler, wing mirrors and belt line. Pretty much standard, with just after market alloys and Dastek Unichip and turbo module fitted by Millway Coachworks in 2004.

List of things to do (so far - important bits):
Buy a cover
Trip to Pacific Works (or other garage if anyone can recommend one near Leicester) for: Cam belt change, new clutch, wheels balanced
Rear of rear wheel arch welding (Small hole)
Fill sills with waxoil (they've already been replaced)
Fix central locking - locking driver's door doesn't lock passenger, but does work the other way around.
Buy new alarm fob - one I have has just about had it. It's an Auto Watch system.
ICE install - currently still has original Japanese system
New aerial - maybe fix original or replace with something else
May have to replace suspension before January - current suspension is corroded and has been an advisory for a few years now on MOTs and that's when it's next due

Longer term bits:
Repaint lower lip and belt line of front bumper to lighter silver to match wing mirrors and spoiler as per standard.
Fix scuffs on roof and tiny bubbles on bonnet
Brake upgrade
replace alloy wheels

Possible:
Full colour change respray and body kit - was one of the things I wanted to do to any MR2 I bought although currently I quite like the stock look of this car so may not do this
Engine mods - still be be researched

All in all I'm a very happy bunny

Will be following with interest as a fellow MR2 newbie... just happened to drop mine off at Pacific Works today so if you see a yellow one there you'll know whose it is!

You definitely want a crazy bodykit and spoiler, it's what these cars are all about 8)

These cars have so much scope for crazy modification it`s unreal. Not a panel on the car that there isn`t an aftermarket equivalent to switch over to. You won`t be disappointed if that is your thing! :thumleft: Of course there is always the minto concourse route to go down... :thumleft:

Congratulations on the new motor :thumleft:

Can you hear the aerial motor turning? There is a how to guide to fixing the stock aerial here http://www.mr2oc.co.uk/know-your-2-know ... bartid=138

Or you could do what I did and fit a Honda S2000 aerial, see here http://www.imoc.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?t=160677

Hi Nic, thanks for the links. I admit I did see your thread about the s2000 aerial and that was why I said I may look at something other than fixing the standard option :)

Haven't had chance to test it, so have no idea about the motor yet.

I've not had chance to look into it much, looks to be Toyota standard but here's a photo:

I tried to find a radio station unsuccessfully, the range doesn't seem right.. but then I have no aerial either so that's not going to help!

Lovely car, welcome to MR2 ownership. I'd give Rogue a call if I were you as they're much nearer and highly recommended: http://www.roguesystems.co.uk/ :)

I love SMG - it's my 2nd favourite colour on SW20s.

I may be selling a single DIN Alpine CD/ipod/radio unit soon.

Thank you - yes, I had heard that about Rogue.. I will be making a call :)

Don't think I'm going to go for single DIN unit, may go the whole hog and put a double DIN navigation unit in...

Good plan - I was thinking about doing that myself but I've decided to probably just put a blanking plate in and have no ICE because I never use it. The last redeeming feature of my car to any passenger will be removed

If thats the original JDM stereo you are right - the range isn't right - you can put a'band expander' in which is easy enough - hooks into the aerial socket and a 12v power supply and of course fixing the aerial situation will help out loads :thumleft:

So, I dropped it off at Rogue this morning. We're off on our holidays today so thought it a good time to get all essential major work done whilst we're away.

They did their 70 point check first and called me after to confirm the work:

Clutch - which we knew
Cam belt - which we knew
Water pump (requested by hubby)
Front track rod
Possible coolant leak due to pressure change observed - check and confirm
Possibly remove Dastek Unichip, waiting for advice from Patrick
Replace blown flexi pipe on exhaust

Things for Adam (hubby) to do:
Rear brake binding slightly
Replace chassis bars - maybe
Change wiper blades
Treat and protect chassis and ubderside as very rusty currently

For other garage:
Weld hole in rear wheel arch
Check for leak in air con

SMG is the best colour for the 2's.

Definitely recommend getting rid of the Unichip. Waste of time. :thumleft:
