[Mk2] [Turbo] 1991 REV 1 * Turbo Not Kicking In * PLEASE HELP!!

Hi guys, I bought this car yesterday and drove it over 200 miles without a problem. After cleaning it all day I took it for a drive and had a major issue.

I was accelerating hard on the bypass in 4th gear and at 5000rpm the boost cut out. I had no turbo at all. No smoke in the rear view or nothing just became a slug!

I tried switching it off and restarting without joy..... I have checked for codes and the EML flashes constantly.

Please can someone help me or direct me as to what could be the problem?? It will be greatly appreciated.

Any loud pops before slug ? Popped a boost pipe off ?

There was a 'clug' type noise before I lost boost....... Do you know where I should be looking?

Intercooler pipe popped off?? Or hose split?

Is that going to be on the drivers side of the engine bay? Im useless with stuff like this....

Yep drivers side two pipes going off to wing. Also worth checking pipe from cooler to throttle

On my CT20 I lost my exhaust turbine wheel.

Obviously no boost but I did have smoke if I put my foot down.

Wow...well it looks like I have had a close shave!

There was a piece of foam out of the 'HKS Mushroom Filter' which had wedged itself into the turbo blades and would allow it to spin.

I pulled all of that out and put back together and it's whistling again....

That filter must be in a bad state to get to the level of coming apart!!

Hopefully lesson learned.

The filter is an absolute disgrace! Does anyone have one for sale to collect or posted to West Yorkshire????

Try Peter Gidden of sbits - he is yorkshire based - I have a couple of filters out in the garage but am way down south from you.
