Alternative intercoolers

Post by MegatronUK »

Just browsing ebay and it seems there are tons of really cheap, BIG intercoolers out there... from Disco's and Range Rover Tdi's, for example. Some of them are 2 - 3 times the size of a mk2 intercooler.

Is there any reason, other than finding space to fit it, why one of these beasties could not be used on a turbocharged MR2 (either mk1 or mk2)?

Say, on a modded mk1, you could mount it in the rear boot, under the spoiler, with either a couple of scoops, or, the top of the boot cut out completely and replaced with mesh (the spoiler would stop people poking their fingers in!).

More air flows over the top of the car, so would be more feasible taking a feed from the top of the side to cool an boot mounted intercooler.

Way forward for you !! Its already going to be well modded, you might as well cut the boost open and fit a large volume core in the back too !

You'll have to cut the boot floor out to get some flow through the core.... couple of fans.

No, space is the biggest problem...
So unless as JJ sudgested you go for a boot mounted IC then the Phoenix Power one is the largest core you can fit on the std location (on a MK2).
Another thing to keep in mind is that increasing the pire length/bore you'll also increase turbo lag but if your going for big power then you'll have to live with it, unless you get a nitrous system to go with it :D
(RS200 type mounting maybe? that should also provide you with loads of cold air...)
And by sticking the IC in the boot you also loose the boot altogether (so no shopping anymore - not that the 2 is the most practical car anyway ...)
A very popular option is a used GTR IC by the way
