[Mk2] [Turbo] Rev 1 Turbo choking, losing power, spluttering, stalling

Post by v1xz »

Rev 1 Turbo drives fine for a few minutes then begins to splutter/cough/die eventually. Switch engine off, start it up again and its fine for another few minutes. No ECU codes stored. AFM unit changed for a good one. Anyone have an idea where else to look? Engine is completely standard...

Ive had this vehicle for a few days now. Started off as owner said it was hitting fuel cut. Which it wasnt, it was also not the knock sensor.

After putting it back together it ran fine and boosted until a few minutes in and it just doesn't have any power under load.

Any help?

How is the turbo inlet pipe looking? They crack over time.

I believe it is a new silicone pipe which was installed by last owner.
Does this pipe need to be air tight?

You don't want to have any possible leaks otherwise the turbocharger will compress unmetered air which may cause rough running.

Thanks for this but it seems like it didnt last.

The intake pipe was ripped so i patched it up so it was tight. Drove as it would but then on certain occasions it would cough, splutter, no power. But it did seem to stay alive abit longer then it was \:D/ \:D/

Has someone tampered with the map sensor and hand wired in an FCD/Diode?

24 is the IAT Sensor in the MAF (open circuit or short)
31 is the MAP Sensor (open circuit or short)

The AFM box has been changed for a good unit.
Only thing I have done is install a boost gauge, 't' piece into pipe from map sensor.
No FCD or diode installed.
Would 24 no indicate the sensor inside throttle body?

This problem still presists...
I managed to clear all codes and they didnt return
I then managed to get code 22 and 42, which cleared also and havent returned.

Ive replaced the ecu with another and no change.

Im coming to end of my tether here.
I have noticed the vehicle is warming up really really quick, could it be that its running lean? Fuel pump on way out and not providing enough pressure on boost when warm?

you could swap the IAT sensor for the one on the engine lid. they are the same sensor. just to rule that out as faulty.

have you tested the temp sensor to make sure it's not at fault?
